Put it There, Don't Put it There

After the state highway department stopped picking up flood-related debris from along the highway, the county said there would still be pickups from the county road. We took that as permission to take our debris - ruined house contents and house remnants that were deposited along and in the river - to the county road for pickup until May 10.

I went down there with a truck load the other day, and they had put up big "No Dumping" signs. I dumped it anyway, one eye out for the cops, because there was already a bunch of stuff there.

When I asked the county person in charge of the program what we are supposed to do, she said there were complaints about people dumping household trash there instead of flood debris. As far as she knew, it was still okay for flood debris.

But yesterday she sent another email that nothing at all can be put there. Fortunately, I have gotten most of my bulky debris hauled off, including a ruined water heater, so it's not the end of the world for me. Can't speak for all the other people who have yet to get started cleaning out their summer cabins.

You'd think the scrappers would be out making a buck from metal and water heaters etc. I've been watching them on youtube. Reclaiming gold from computer boards and such. Not sure why no one is doing it here that I know of, or there, for that matter.

They are doing it here. I've seen one outfit in particular driving around with salvaged items on a landscaper trailer. There are reports that some of them have been combing through wrecked houses instead of what has been put out on the road, but I haven't seen any of that myself.

I think that goose's mate might be on a nest of eggs over at the county park just west of us because they usually travel in pairs.

I keep thinking about the summer people who have waited until May and June to start dealing with their flooded cabins. They will have missed out on some of the opportunities for assistance.

I am glad you have most of your debris taken care of. Love the critter.

What a relief to have that out of the way. I'm so grateful to the people who came from Omaha to help me because I couldn't have gotten it done by myself.

Looks like a little Spring runoff has begun?

The river went from 35 cfs (cubic feet per second) to 40 cfs about a week ago. It should be about 160 cfs right now, but they are artificially holding it back while work continues in the canyon. There is a tunnel system over the mountain so that extra water can be diverted to the reservoirs, but May 1 we think they'll open it up. I hope it's not during the night because I want to watch it, but they also don't want to surprise someone who is standing in the river fishing when 2 feet of water comes down the canyon.
