What Would We Do Without It

There is some state law or policy here in Colorado that municipalities can't get involved in providing cable or broadband service as a utility unless each town's voters approve it, and that is moving along in our region.

I am on the town utilities grid, so they sent me a survey about what I would pay for better/faster internet. It seemed to ask the same question several times, and I got tired of trying to figure out the differences between the first two or three times they asked if I am willing to pay more per month with no installation fee, or less per month with at least $70 installation fee. Finally, I gave up trying to figure it out and consistently said No, I will not pay $95 a month for basic internet, would rather pay the installation fee.

Getting a better system has become especially relevant lately because last Wednesday we had a big, wet spring snowstorm that wiped out fiber optic cables to the Town of Estes Park. I had phone, but no Internet for a couple of days, but even better all those smug town people were also without cell phones, credit card terminals, and internet. Now they know how the rest of us live more often than we care to think about. I have a feeling getting that service down to my house is not going to happen in my lifetime because once the people in town are all taken care of, they will forget out the outlying areas.

When I got to town Wednesday morning, the southbound traffic lights were so filled with snow, it looked like they were all out - there was no way to tell what color was lit. But the oncoming and cross traffic could see their lights, so they were proceeding as normal. I almost got t-boned before I realized what was the deal was. After that, when I came up to an intersection, I creeped forward until I could see the cross lights and went by that.

This morning the shower knob in the master bath came off, and I knew a plumber would charge $250 to come do something easy, but I didn't know how to begin, and would rather wait 6 weeks for Mr. TroutBend to come from Las Vegas. But aha! The internet!

This is from YouTube:

I realized the screw had come loose, and all I had to do was remove that little cover to fix it. There. All done. Hundreds saved. My day is not ruined.

Plumbers must hate the internet.

The old Incandescent flood lights in the street traffic signals kept the snow melted. Then they switched to LEDs, and that won't happen anymore.

That explains it. I didn't know why I'd never seen that before, but we don't always have blizzards with driving snow from one direction.

I love the internet because it is able to solve so many problems. I watched several different videos on how to fold a fitted sheet. But I couldn't do it. I roll the sheet into a ball. Sue me. I refer to our area as the boonies, but yours has us beat.

We all have to do what works best for us.

I google what I want to know but have not availed myself of you tube.
sounds like a plan!

My mother was born just a few days after you, and I often wonder if, were she still living, she would be doing as much with the Internet as you do, Jeri. If only it had been my dad who'd died first, she would have come into her own life, and she had such a zest for it, and did so much, like you do, it would have been fun to see.

Sorry but 'repairs' and I don't get/go together!!

I always think of you when I post something about home repairs, tell myself 'if Martin was here, we wouldn't be asking him for advice.'

Yeah, aren't repair videos some of the best things people share online? I keep trying to tell one sister (who works too much to use the internet extensively) that Youtube really isn't just a timewasters' paradise, that it has terribly vital things on it.

"Terribly vital." I like that. I'll probably start saying it and will wear it out. "It's terribly vital that someone come move this 300 pound boulder from my driveway."

I have been able to do things thanks to youtube that I had never before considered attempting. Always good to watch at least several vids on tough stuff just in case the first guy is actually clueless and filming his best guess.

One of the charges on all our cell phone bills and probably internet is to provide service to rural areas. I have no idea where the money goes, but it hasn't come here either.

So true about watching several and taking the average of the advice, or more like what makes the most sense for our current situation and abilities.

When I looked at the map of the broadband deployment phases for my area, where I live was obviously the afterthought; they might as well have written 'here be dragons' in my neighborhood.
