This and That

I always enjoy the this and thats by other people. Here's what's on my mind today.

We've got snow and colder weather coming tomorrow night, but not expecting deep snow. When I went to town this afternoon for the mail, it looked like someone drove up to the end of my bridge, got out and walked around, maybe sometime today. I always look for fresh tracks, and measure the footprints against my own to make sure I'm not seeing my own tracks made yesterday. It would be nice to know who comes down here, and what they are looking at. I don't think it's tourists, it's probably county bridge people or someone looking at the condition of the river banks.

This is down the road from me. I am counting my blessings that my flood damage isn't this bad. Every other missing bridge has been fixed, but it hasn't been decided what to do with this one because they have to figure out if they want to put the river back where it was, and how much of the eroded bank to replace.

I think there is only one year-round resident, and she is frantic to find a way to fill in the bank. I don't blame her, but I think she needs to have faith that either the state or county roads people will restore access to her house when they decide what to do. It will be worth the wait if they come up with a more durable design.

My garden seeds are on the way, and I am going to start planning the layout of my garden, and when to plant what. I ordered some short-season tomato plants that will come in early April.

Various neighbors have mentioned that we all have PTSD to some extent. I noticed some things right after the flood - couldn't sleep, no appetite (that was a good thing), and flashbacks. Those things are behind me for the most part, but now I notice that I'm spending a lot more money than usual. Generally, when I think I need something, I'll do a lot of research and really think hard about whether I need it. Not lately.

Last month I saw a winter coat and just bought it without thinking because I was so tired of being cold all the time, and didn't have a warm coat that fit. It was overpriced, and I shouldn't have bought it, but too late to take it back, and it IS warm, so I'll get some use out of it. And yesterday I went to town and bought a big bunch of ink for my printer. It will be months before I need it.

You have to be so patient with all of the timing and planning — you deserve a splurge, especially since it will keep you warm. That's a blessing.

One reason I have buyer's remorse is that I belatedly discovered the jacket doesn't have a two-way zipper, and it's a slim fit, so I can't have it zipped up and bend down to do things. There is velcro along the placket to sort of shut it like buttons, so at least there is that. I looked at in terms of whether I could replace that zipper, and no. But I try not to think about all that, and enjoy the coat as a dressier alternative. I just need to get over it.

So nice to read about seeds. I picked up 8 or 10 packets today at Walmart. Seeds in January, but that's the way it is. Wait too long and they don't reorder. I missed out on enough yellow squash last year and I don't prefer to make the same mistake twice. Hopefully spring will take your mind of the PTSD.

Last fall I stopped by our local garden center (trying to buy local) to get some spinach seeds for planting 'way early this spring, and they said they'd forgotten to renew their license to sell seeds. I tried to explain that I live so far away, it's not very convenient to get in there, so couldn't they just Give or Loan me the seeds and I'd pay them when they got their license back. Or... "Look! Choppers!" and while they were distracted I'd walk out the door with the seeds and own up to it next time.

Don't fuss over buying the coat -- it isn't a luxury, it's a necessity and you deserve to have something that keeps you warm. Yes, I spend too when I am stressed -- it's a great way to recover if you have the resources to do it.

I realized Mr. YouKnow is going to see those coats marked down because it was in Las Vegas and I don't think folks are going to pay all that money for a fancy jacket in that climate. He'll never forget how foolish I was, but we're not going to discuss it. He can just think what he wants, and I'm not asking him what that is.

Stress brings on a need to shop. Happens to everyone.

At this point in time, I'm glad it's the shopping instead of eating.

You will have that coat for many years. It is not a frivolous purchase even though it may seem like that now. Remember that you are worth it.

So true. I was wearing a coat of my dad's - too big, bomber jacket style. It was okay when I was poking around here in a blizzard, but I've been going to a lot of meetings and want to look a little bit better put together. This is the first year since we moved to this house that I have been here all winter.

You have been so stressed out. I have noticed that a little bit of carefree
fun helps immensely with stress. My trip to Branson just saved my life
after Ted shot himself in the foot to add to my ever present anxiety over
Bobby. Laughter is such good medicine.

I'm thinking of that English expression 'a change is as good as a rest' and how I could apply that around here. Paint a wall some crazy color?

"now I notice that I'm spending a lot more money than usual." We all are but the rest of us get to spend it on foolish things--you will soon, too!

Not that I mind having new things, and they mostly seem to be necessary - like a 1 terabyte external hard drive for backing up my computers - but I'll be glad when I get past it.
