This Oughta Be Good

Then and Now

Back in 1976 we had a big flood here along the lines of the one we just had in September 2013. Today I scanned a bunch of the family pictures taken back then to identify where the damage was the same in both floods in order to identify weak areas in the overall river design.

Then:

The bank along our house was badly eroded.

This time:

One little spot, about 20 feet wide washed out and these trees lost their footing, but otherwise the bank held up really well.

The riverbank below my upper driveway looks identical to what we saw in this recent flood. Obviously, some better engineering is called for.

Just super that you have these photos to compare, Laura. Really valuable as repairs and reconstruction move ahead.

What are you using to scan photos? I have a scanning printer, but wonder if you use something special. Alas, I have a raft of family slides and no slide scanner. I've got to find one, somewhere....

Thank you, sweetie!

I don't have anything special. Here is an article about how to kludge a slide/negative scanner. Or google 'scan slides standard scanner' https://techchannel.radioshack.com/scan-photo-negatives-using-flatbed-scanner-1738.html I have a few slides, so one of these days I'll try it.

I think taking pictures of all the events that happen in our life--well, except that--is great to look at and compare years later.

How's our red cabin??

Love that red cabin. Hope it will be okay....

Our red cabin is doing okay, I guess. The other day I noticed that the front door had blown open. The doorframe or maybe the door itself is warped and for awhile it wouldn't close all the way. Now it's better but still can't latch it. I pushed some heavy furniture up against it and went out the back door, which also won't shut all the way but at least it doesn't blow open. This summer we'll have to decide what to do with it, based on whether there are negative consequences in the future if we do nothing and use it as a storage shed.
