Under the Snow

It's been so warm, and before that the wind blew a lot of the snow away. I went out today to get some sun and take pictures of what's under the snow because I'd sort of forgotten.

This is new dirt that the road workers put down, smoothing out some dips that used to be at the top of the road.

Come spring, we'll be dealing with these trees.

The river restoration people kept telling us to save the downed trees for reinforcing the river banks, but yesterday I found out they don't want anything less than 16 inches in diameter. That changes things. Fortunately, we don't have nearly as much big heavy debris to deal with as other properties.

There is a thing in the news today about how an avalanche has cut off the only road into Valdez, Alaska. I know exactly how those people feel.

I wish I could help.

Oh, you help plenty with your moral support. I still remember that you noticed the flooding early on and commented on it.

I guess there will always be reminders of the flood (besides getting hit in the pocketbook) but within 5 years all should be well--even with the very destructive hurricanes we have had now without any for 9 years it looks like we never had a one!

Hi ... we are reforested in this area, but the knowing eye still sees dead trees lacing the landscape. And the Australian Pines take years to even out their symmetrical branches and not look lopsided. Punta Gorda was practically flattened and has been rebuilt.

Up here where I live, things should be looking about the same within a couple of years, but down in the moonscape areas things will never be as before: fewer houses, thousands of big trees lost, acres of topsoil gone forever. Every time I drive through there I notice something in the near distance that previously was blocked by buildings or trees.

It looks like a ton of work, but I am totally clueless when it comes to massive repair. Following Charley, there were stripped trees (still there)
and trees with their tops off, and, for years there were huge fallen trees with their root balls exposed that were never cleared off which, I assume, is because they were unsightly but not interfering with the roads. The County just let nature take its course. But it was a constant reminder of the storm and in some neighborhoods, the residents had to endure a total change in their environment unless they wanted to pay for removal and replanting.

We're all waiting to see how much the county is going to let us allow nature to take its course: whether they will force the landowners to clean up the debris and pay for it ourselves.

Do the evergreens make good kindling for the fireplace or do they burn too
hot? I am thinking of additions to your wood pile.

Pine burns fast so it's not as good as hard wood for putting out heat. We don't worry about too hot, or too much resin like Marta mentioned because we're not using an airtight stove. The wood I have from our woodpile is low quality over all, and partly because it's so old.

I was wondering the same thing, Jeri. My Dad never burned pine logs in our fireplaces. He said they gunked up the flues.
