Supermarket Snacking

Did you see that story out of Hawaii where a woman ate an entire chicken salad sandwich while shopping at the Safeway store and then forgot to pay for it with the rest of her groceries?

She and her husband were arrested for shoplifting and their toddler was turned over to child protective services for 18 hours. The Safeway store management later apologized, saying that when they called the police, they didn't realize the child would be taken from the parents since they were both going to be arrested.

Commenters on facebook etc. fall on two sides of this argument: some think there is nothing wrong with wandering around the supermarket eating something off the shelves as long as they keep the packaging so it can be scanned and paid for at the register.

Others think it's just wrong to eat something until it's paid for because it comes across as a sense of entitlement and flaunting of the rules that apply to most of us.

One of my rich friends was like this - we'd stop at the store to pick up something, and she'd grab a loaf of French bread and walk around tearing pieces off it to eat while shopping. I didn't approve, but apparently that particular market was used to it.

One reason I don't like it is that it gives a wrong message to children - they may not understand that the parents are eventually going to pay for the food they grab and eat.

One of the things mentioned in the article I read: whether it is right or wrong depends on the neighborhood and the store. In other words, it's okay for rich people to help themselves, but when poor people do it, it's a crime.

Lots of people eat their way through the store based on the empty wrappers that I see tucked into shelves along the aisles. Mostly candy and junk food.

I've seen little kids walk up to packaged baked goods, open them, and help themselves - meanwhile, the parents are ??? off somewhere.

I can understand the temptation to nibble at available foods, but I have never succumbed to it. It's just plain wrong, period.

I think some people get into the habit and don't give it a second thought. I don't even approve of opening my food packages to eat on the way home, but that's a personal discipline thing.

You are absolutely right and I am going to stop eating one grape to see if
it is worthwhile to buy them. Shame on me.

Safeway used to put out a thing of grapes for people to sample and see if they were good. At least you weren't opening a bag of chips to see if they were tasty enough to pay for.

They need to have Cat Day at Petsmart and ban the dogs just that one day of the week. Catz in Kartz - fun idea.

I'm not an angel--see I admit it--but I never have eaten anything in a grocery store--no reason that I can think of

Oh, you're somebody's angel.

Why do people think they can use/eat things that aren't theirs, yet? I feel guilty when my grandson takes one of he cookies that are left out in the bakery department for customers to taste.

One of the excuses mentioned was to calm a fussy child (although that wasn't the case in this case). But there is so much wrong with setting the example that gratification should be instant.
