Recorded Shows

Here's what's on my DVR.

Bernie - a movie starring Jack Black as a beloved con artist who charmed a Texas town and ended up murdering his rich benefactor, put her body in the deep freezer and managed to deflect requests to speak to her for months. Finally was caught. It's a true story, and you know how sometimes we say: 'you couldn't make this up.' Favorite line from the movie: 'and they selected the jury from that other county where they've got more tattoos then they have teeth.'

Better Call Saul, about 19 episodes - the prequel to Breaking Bad featuring the guy who was Walter White's sleazy lawyer. I enjoy re-watching the episodes, and am looking forward to seeing how he eventually went from being Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman.

Chopped - that Food Network cooking show where contestants try to make a decent meal out of weird food.

Cook's Country - the PBS cooking show. I like it because they try all kinds of methods and ingredients to come up with a perfect recipe. Some of the methods seem very involved, but I always get a good result when I follow their directions. And they don't use weird hard-to-find ingredients.

Fargo - the AMC series AND the movie. The second season of the TV show is about feuding brothers in North Dakota and a sophisticated criminal who takes advantage of them. I enjoy re-watching the old episodes because there's lots of nuances in Cohen Brothers productions.

Judge Judy - when I'm out of sorts, Judge Judy's snarling cheers me up.

Major League Baseball: By some fluke we are able to watch the Colorado Rockies games this year. I record them and fast forward to where it gets interesting. I delete a lot of the games without watching them at all.

Mark Twain - the Ken Burns two part series on PBS. Mark Twain made some really funny comments that are still relevant today. "Suppose you were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress, but I repeat myself."

Mountain Life, 1 episode - one of those HGTV type real estate shows where a couple is looking for a new home in a certain area. This episode featured Estes Park, the nearest town to me. I enjoyed seeing the houses that were on the market at that time. One of them supposedly was near me on the river within view of the highway, but I didn't recognize either the house or the river.

Shameless - that Showtime series about a rowdy family living in the tough part of Chicago. I recorded several episodes during one of Showtime's free weekends. I've worked through the marathon, down to one last one.

The Americans - the series on FX about Russian spies living in the US and raising a family. It's ended now, after many seasons, but looks like some of the episodes are being re-shown and my timer is picking them up. I wish they would have started over at the beginning because I didn't come to it until late in the game, so a lot of the time I didn't know what the heck was going on. It's available on Amazon Prime so I went over there and watched from the start and that answered all my questions but I wouldn't mind watching them via my TV set.

The Debt - a movie from 2010. Here's the synopsis: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain - A Mossad agent investigates a Nazi war criminal who was supposedly killed 30 years earlier. I think I've started to watch it a few times and couldn't get caught up in it. I'll give it one last try.

The First 48 - Crime documentary series on Lifetime from a few years ago. The most important time after a homicide is the, you guessed it, first 48 hours. I have tons of episodes recorded because they air several a day, and often I bulk delete them without watching them. I like it because it's not so much acting like the cop shows on the network tv, and the plots aren't contrived. Mr. TBend and I laugh about it because every incident description ends up along the lines of: 'finds a woman .... Dead.' with a big pause. Once in awhile they throw us a curve and the victim makes it to the hospital and in that case the narrator says 'didn't make it' without the dramatic pause.

The Great British Baking Show - several episodes. Even though seeing all the lovely baked goods makes me hungry, my favorite part is how civil the contestants are. Americans would be 'edgy' and trash talking their opponents and their recipes would be less imaginative.

The Great Food Truck Race - I watch this to see the various cities they visit. Seems like most of the episodes are in the western states, so I look for places I've been. And also I enjoy the melt-downs.

The Price is Right - I don't always get to watch and delete that day's show, so they build up. Always have liked Drew Carey. I think he truly wants the contestants to do well. Bob Barker was more about Bob Barker.

The Usual Suspects - that movie with Kevin Spacey. Even though I know the ending, I enjoy re-watching it.

Unsolved Mysteries - a 1980s series on Lifetime. They must have two or three episodes a day because the recordings add up quickly, and I can't keep up. The host is Dennis Farina, that character actor who played a lot of mob guys. I enjoy seeing the hair and clothing from the 1980s.

Who is America? - that Showtime series starring Sacha Baron Cohen. I watched a couple of them, and as usual with his efforts found it awkward and often hard to watch. Then I saw in the news that one of the politicians he poked fun at sued him because the guy didn't realize what it was about when he agreed to participate. So I didn't delete four of episodes to see if there is some redeeming quality about them. I don't know if that particular one got saved.

In this rural area my internet is so slow I can knit several stitches while a web page loads, and watching TV at the same time gives me something to think about while I wait.

A few years back tons of dramatic shows were about very bad people: Dexter the serial killer, the nurse junkie, Hung with the male prostitute, Sopranos, and of course Breaking Bad. Now, I see some about moral quandary and more normally flawed people, like in The Good Place. Saul is kind of in between these 2, and I like it.

Actually those shows weren't always about bad people, but at least people doing illegal things.

I love Shameless and The Americans!

I stopped taping shows years ago--I never did watch them!
