Mittengate: Michigan vs Wisconsin

Tom Lyons, who works in public relations, uses his hand Wednesday to show the location of Neenah, Wis., where he lives. Lyons says Michigan residents, who have long held up a hand to show where they live, shouldn't be getting their yarn in a twist over Wisconsin's mitten theme for its winter tourism campaign. He says he often holds up his left hand when locating state places for others. / Sam Wiltzius/Associated Press

Michigan is centered on the above map, and clearly looks like a mitten. Wisconsin, not so much, even if you color it pink.

I live below the R in Racine across the dotted state line and down a little bit. That part of Illinois was once part of WI before they became states. That is why the line is so straight.

And they must have had a good surveyor for once.

I agree. Michigan fits better. Again, is it really worth the time to argue about it, though. When will Americans ever learn to "pick their fights." I tell my kids this all the time when they scold their children over things that are insignificant as to border on "why waste your time."

The economy is so bleak in Michigan, they probably needed the distraction - nothing but time to waste until things improve.

It really looks like a profile with hair spiked up in the back.

Almost like Geo Washington crossing the Mississippi.

Wisconsin looks more like a northbound Moby Dick with its mouth opening so it can swallow the northern peninsula of Michigan, the REAL "Mitten" state.

Looking at it, seems like the Upper P should have belonged to Wisconsin. They're probably still bitter about it.

Makes you wonder how Martin would show where he lives in Florida.
