Meteor over Monument Valley

I was looking for meteor shower photos on the Astronomy Picture of the Day site, and found this. My mother grew up near Monument Valley and it is one of my favorite places.

While living in Oklahoma it was so flat out there .When I was outside at night and spun around. The stars were all around you it seemed and you could almost touch them..

One time a woman called about renting one of my cabins so they could watch the meteor shower, and I told her since we live down in a river canyon, our sky isn't that big. I asked her when was the last time she watched a meteor shower, and she said at a lake in Oklahoma, so your comment reminded me of that. I told her she would probably be better off in a similar setting on the Colorado plains away from the city lights.

I grew up on a farm in western Oklahoma. I used to lie outside at night and look at the stars. They were millions and the Milky Way was clearly visible. I don't think my grandchildren have ever even seen the Milky Way, and they have absolutely no idea how many stars are in the heavens.

Unless it's Las Vegas on the horizon. I hope not.

It has been so long since I have seen stars like that. I yearn for a place to go to see all the stars in the heavens again.

I know what you mean. When we lived in Denver I always felt cheated out of really seeing the stars.

One of the best things my dad ever did for me was fly me 'through' Monument Valley in his small plane so I could see the formations up close and take pictures.
