Hovenweep and Mesa Verde

Just around the corner from where my mother grew up in the southwest corner of Colorado is Hovenweep National Monument.

It was built about 800 years ago, around the same time as Mesa Verde, which is 65 miles to the east.

The existing structures are mostly towers sitting up on the mesa and mayb have been watch towers or for grain storage.

Here's a nice photo of some of Mesa Verde, in case you forgot what it looks like.

There is another ruin called Yucca House between these two in what used to be my Great Uncle Ray's cow pasture. It consists of a huge rectangular building that has not been excavated and some ceremonial kivas.

Been there, done that. Plus, I'm going through that area again next week! Still planning my itinerary, but I doubt if I will be swinging past your uncle's place. We'll see. (I'm determined to find it!)

The Anasazi ruins fascinate me. I am sorry that I have never seen them.

My uncles down there found a perfectly intact pottery jug with corn in it and donated it to Mesa Verde, where it's on display.
