Blood Drive for Dogs and Cats

The Las Vegas paper had an article about a recent blood drive to gather donations from dogs and cats.

It's hard to imagine taking a healthy pet to the vet clinic and subjecting it to a blood drawing procedure.

Dogs have 43 different blood types, often making it difficult to match. One blood type, which is found in about one in five dogs, is considered universal and can be given to all dogs.

In contrast, cats have only three blood types - two of which are found in the United States. Both are accepted and stored at the Animal Blood Bank.

Reading through the article, I decided maybe it's okay, because someday one of my pets might need surgery; it's just hard to imagine putting sweet little Eloise through that.

I wonder how they get them to be still while they do the draw. My cat has a loud fit when they just do a blood test on his ankle.

The article said most of the blood for veterinary transfusions comes from some place in Michigan, and I really hate to think about what is going on there. As traumatic as it'd be for our pets, I'd rather contemplate their loving owners being with them instead of it being all about money.

I was surprised at all those blood types.
