His Last Press Conference

In his last press conference, President Bush meandered on endlessly about the effects of his policies and how he made good decisions and how he saved us from terror and how history will vindicate him and how Obama should “watch out” if he doesn’t do much as Bush has done. He came to office to be a uniter, he said. Well, he failed miserably and a great deal of that failure had to do with adopting religious principles that many enlightened Americans find oppressive and over weaning and offensive, such as denying basic human privileges to gays, being blind about the benefits of stem cell research on fetuses that otherwise go into the garbage, and preening about his God-like invasion of Iraq.

Clips from the conference were repeated throughout other programs as news hosts analyzed his points. Once was enough for me.

Bush said he looks forward to having a lazy morning in Texas and making coffee for Laura, the most self-sacrificing of wives. If I were Laura, I’d say, Oh, George, you owe me so very much more than COFFEE!!

The desire to make Bush understand his failures is futile. He is in major denial and holding a mirror up to him will not produce the desired result. Like the Dorian Gray painting in the closet showing him as he is, he prances around seeing only what he wants to see. We are well rid of him. I don’t see him getting big fees for appearances as former presidents have done, but there are still pockets of the heartland who might well ask him to speak. The blind adoring the blind. =“Sheesh, Mama, he jist like us’n.”
