Haiti and God

The disaster in Haiti is horrendous. When events like this happen, not the result of a terrorist act, but nature intruding on our more or less ordered lives, I always think of those who say God works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform. Who was He testing this time? The impoverished Haitians? Were they not, perhaps, devout enough? If that were the criteria, most of the world would be in ruins. (And while I am on the subject of Haiti, did y’all hear Rush Limbaugh’s perspective? He thinks the earthquake just falls right into Obama’s lap, giving him the opportunity for grand acts of charity by which to solidify his base with black people.)

There is a humanist movement growing in this country, according to author Greg Epstein. He has written a book, “Good without God” and he heads the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard.

Here is a definition from their web site:

“The vision of the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard is to develop a flourishing community that, without supernaturalism, affirms the ability and responsibility of all of us to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.”
If you want to know more, you can Google the site and follow the links.

What really saddens me about the future of any philosophical movement of this kind is that it is fed and nurtured by inquiring minds and intelligent pursuit of ethical goals. Has anyone noticed how sadly lacking the world is in these qualities? Jay used to say that only ten percent of the world's population had any real smarts (I think he was being generous.)

And may I also say I appreciate how many compatible minds I have found on this blog site. Love you all.
