Bits and Pieces

I was doing a crossword and one of the definitions was about a Greek god and it got me to thinking about how many names I knew of Greek and roman gods. So I looked them up on the internet and I found the lore rather confusing because sometimes a god went by more than one name.

One of the more appealing gods is Apollo, or Helius (the Greek name for the sun is Helio) and he is the God of light and he is also very artistic and musical and I have decided that he will be my god. It suits me to have a handsome fellow, an ectomorph yet, with wings, driving a golden chariot across the Heavens as my god of choice. I also like his twin sister, Artemis, but she had a mean side, so I won’t be asking her for anything.

Poseidon, god of the sea (Roman name, Neptune) is another favorite. He is very strong and makes waves. Oh, I like that. So when I am beseeching the spirits for some assistance, I’ll think of one of these two fellows. Now that I have settled my spiritual orientation, I feel a lot better.

About Cheney: Every time I see him explaining himself on TV and telling us how wrong Obama is about everything, I am reminded of the courtroom scene in the film, The Caine Mutiny. Humphrey Bogart, as Captain Queeg, is in the witness chair and he is explaining himself. He is rolling marbles in one hand, a compulsive habit. His eyes are darting around the room, his voice is anxious, his reasons do not make sense. As he speaks, he gets more weird until his paranoia is palpable and his insanity dominates the room. Suddenly he stops, aware that he has doomed himself with his own words. Fear washes over his face. A wonderful scene. This is what I see in Cheney when he speaks.

I have heard from Marty (Island Girl) and she wrote me at length about her job as a pipeline inspector out in the Midwest. I am so impressed. I told her she should post this E mail on her blog, if she ever gets around to coming back on. She also showed me a couple of before and after photos of one site she and her crew took care of. She will have a few months off starting in the fall and I am trying to persuade her and Vic to come visit.

I biked this afternoon and it was hot and really sunny when I started out and then it started to rain half way through and I persevered, thinking I could bike between the drops and determined to finish my ride, but finally gave in and headed home and as soon as I pulled into our driveway, the rain stopped.

Then Ed and I were listening to YouTube videos of some great artists. There are some great Hvorostovsky clips of him singing Moscow Nights and other Russian songs, and I saw a clip of Izaak Perelman playing Mendelssohn’s violin concerto when he was just 13, and Ed said he smelled something and it turned out that he had stepped in dog poo while mowing the lawn. I suggested we bag whatever poo we find and drop it off at the offending neighbors.

That’s all.

xx, Teal
