It is late on Saturday. Around 1 p.m. today the transformer on the AC went bust and it took the relay with it. It was a couple of hours before I noticed how hot it was getting and checked the thermostat. We had it set at 78, but the temp was 84. Trouble in River City. We got the AC guy to come over and he didn’t have the right relay so we have to wait till Monday mid-morning to have it replaced.
Meanwhile, it is night time, it may rain (please) and the temp in the house is 87 and all the fans are running and the kitties are flaked, as is Ed. How pathetically we rely on our systems to keep us comfy. When I was a kid we never had air conditioning and we didn’t even have ceiling fans. We just opened all the windows and prayed for a breeze.
I slept in a crib until I was 16 because the family couldn’t afford to buy furniture or they just didn’t think of it (perhaps both). Since I was barely 5 feet, it wasn’t an issue. The crib had high sides and I gave it up reluctantly because one could drape the sheet across the bed, creating privacy and not being touched by anything when it was hot.
Later on I used to visit my boyfriend in his tiny apartment. Also no AC. He had a small fan that he would place on a chair and have it blow into the refrigerator with the door open. There was practically no food, maybe a Coke or two. The fan would distribute the cold air. You had to stay pretty near the fridge to get the benefits. So really I shouldn’t complain that for a day or a bit more, the house will get really hot.
And everything else is working, not like after a hurricane when there is no air and no light and no water and the last time we didn’t have a generator, so there was no refrigeration, also no phone service and no radio or TV and, dare I say it, no computer. (We do have a transistor radio we use for emergencies.) We are talking prehistoric living here. Now we have a portable generator but haven’t had to use it yet. Ed says we won’t have any more hurricanes because we have spent so much money being prepared.
