Trying Times

Friday, September 12, 2008. I stayed up till midnight last night watching the story of the World Trade Center Towers. On Sept. 11, 2001, I had gotten up early and turned on the telly--and was watching as Katie Couric and Tom Brokaw provided commentary on the first burning tower. As I watched, a plane entered the TV screen to the right and crashed into the second tower. Unbelievable events. Stunning surreal unforgettable day that was.
Up early this morning. Low hanging clouds moving fast across the sky, pushed by gusty wind. I went to Big K service station 2 miles away to fill up the car--gas $3.60 a gallon. There was a notice in bold black letters taped on the pump: WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT GAS PURCHASE TO $30.00 SO THAT WE MAY PROVIDE ALL OUR CUSTOMERS WITH FUEL DURING THESE TRYING TIMES. THANK YOU, THE MANAGEMENT.
Saw a neighbor who was on his way to court--problems with ex girlfriend or something.
Then I went to Trudie's Grill in Beaumont for breakfast. 2 eggs over easy, grits, biscuit, sausage and coffee. I rarely eat breakfast, so enjoyed it. Sans jukebox, Trudie was playing a CD of Creedence Clearwater. One of the songs was I Put A Spell On You which always reminds me of OJ Simpson.
Bye y'all, I have work to do. Have a great day. Susil

Such a heartbreaking day. We all share in the sadness and loss.

So I decided to try to transfer shows about 9/11 I had recorded off of cable onto VCR tapes and must have done something wrong that zapped the power supply on my digital video recorder so it went completely dead. I don't know if I've lost those recorded shows or they were sitting on the Dish Network server. I'll find out when the replacement comes. I was just starting to watch "102 minutes that changed the world" and it looked really good - stuff I hadn't seen before. Another good one was a 20 minute (no commercials) on the History Channel called Witnesses to 9/11 or something like that. Was that one you were watching the one with the interviews that took place in January 2001 about the building of the towers and even some references to the security? I thought it was a very good summary and that's one of the shows I was going to try to save forever. I'm always thinking about you when there is storm activity in the gulf. Hope you are doing okay.

The image of the towers were shown so much when it happened that I can't stand to watch anymore. Such a horror. Never heard that song by CCR. Sounds awful!

I do think of it, mostly the terror and bravery of colleagues holding hands and jumping together to certain death rather than getting burned alive. And the aftermath, the pervasive dust in the air, and the sobbing relatives and friends scouring the hospitals and putting posters up everywhere. Ed and I were in the building two days before on business. We had a terrible lunch in a tourist trap and came home. That was close enough for me.

I remember having lunch (on the company, of course) at Windows on the World, a truly lovely setting and a helicopter hovering next to the window where our table was.

I only saw a little of the 9/11 reprise. Being there was enough.
