Last night, for the first time in many months, it got chilly enough to sleep under a sheet! Down to 61 degrees, how bodaciously wonderful. At 3am I had to turn the fan off, and it was very quiet, because even the night crickets outside were silent. A shaft of moonlight came through the curtains and I slept under its light dreamless and peaceful.
This morning, although I shouldn't--budget and all you know, I went to Trudie's for breakfast. I had pancakes and bacon and coffee. A guy was there having breakfast too, and as in all small towns, you talk. Turns out he was a retired enlisted man, in the service for 38 years. He's gung ho for McCain, and the war(s) in the Middle East and says that we haven't had war here because WE TOOK IT TO THEM.
If we hadn't, says he, they'd be over here. He thinks GW Bush is a peachy guy and wished he could serve 4 more years (I was getting indigestion by this time.) He believes in drilling for oil where ever it may be, wildlife refuge or not, in cutting down every tree in sight if the government says it wants too and so forth.
In our talk, he mentioned he'd never read any book from cover to cover. I said how sorry I was about that, and I am. If you don't read, you can't think for yourself. The empty spaces between your ears are filled up with what other people want to instill in there.
Then I said he was naive, and took the rest of my pancakes to go. A die hard conservative and a liberal never the twain shall meet--not a meeting of the mind, anyway. Well, time for a dose of Pepto Bismol. When will I ever learn to shut up?? susil
