I saw a documentary about the anti-Vietnam play/musical Hair! it brought back memories of the great era of hippie-dom, and great songs like the title song Hair: "Gimme it down to there, shoulder length or longer, gleaming, flaxen, waxen, down to here, down to there, down to where it stops by itself Hair, Hair, I got my hair." Girls wore their hair long straight and parted in the middle--some guys too--or, like Angela Davis, in big afros, big fuzzy 'do's, curly 'do's, white afro 'do's--you had to have hair and a lot of it to be counter culture.
And that great song Aquarius; "When the moon is in the seventh house; and Jupiter aligns with Mars; then peace will rule the planet; and love will rule the stars." Oh boy, the days of hippies and flower power and flower children and free love. The musical Hair! embodies anti-establishment anti war sentiments, a multi racial cast, a show fueled marijuana and sex--it celebrated sex. A nude scene in the musical made it infamous and ultimate hippy.
The narrative and lyrics of the show are as relevant now as they were then. Unfortunately, the addition of methamphetamines into the already volatile mix changed the cast and its message from harmless and joyful to harmful and ugly.
I was busy raising kids and working all the time and dealing with an alcoholic NCO career Army man, so hippie days passed me by tho I knew it was there and I had a rebellious streak and liked it. Yesterday I ordered a CD of the original show and can't wait to hear all those great songs again.
