Documentary: Catfish

HBO has been airing a documentary named "Catfish."
It's about a good looking young Jewish guy who meets a girl on Facebook. Let's call the guy J.G.
The girl's photo shows a pouty lipped blond girl who has a bunch of hip, cool friends and a niece who is nine years old and is a talented painter.
The Facebook girl says she has a stable and horses and an active social life.
Finally the guy, J.G. gets her phone number and he falls in love with her voice and her Facebook photo. Nine months pass, months of passionate calls and messages pass between them and the girl sends him a recording she says is of a song she wrote and recorded. However, J.G's brother says he knows the person who wrote and recorded that song and it ain't Facebook girl.

J.G.'s brother, a film maker says I wonder what else she is lying about? He starts filming and the brothers decide to actually go where Facebook girl lives and check her out. They drive 400 miles and find the stables boarded up and for sale. Another lie she has told.

Next day they arrive at Facebook girl's address and guess what? Facebook girl turns out to be a fat middle aged unattractive woman, married, with two severely mentally retarded sons living in the house. There is also a daughter about eight or nine there. Her husband she has told that J.G. Is sending money for artworks and apparently he swallowed that lie. The woman spent hours at night telling J.G. preposterous stories about an exciting life and friends that never existed.

The painter turns out to be the fat woman, who has lied about the painter being a child, lied about everything. She even told J.G. she had cancer, trying to wring sympathy from him.
But J.G. is in love with the photo--turns out the fat woman has found the photo somewhere and copped it to be her. The Facebook photo was of a model who is married with two kids.
He asks fat lady to talk in the voice he has come to love, and she does. It was pitiful to see how much he had been lied to but still, loving that voice.

It just goes to show you can purport to be anyone on the Internet and people will believe you, will believe all kinds of lies, and hurt nice guys like J.G.

Blogs are for people who like to write. There is more room for depth. It takes longer on a blog to form a relationship. When we post, we have room to expand an idea, an opinion. There is an intellectual component missing from the transient style that afflicts these other sites. A predator would be too impatient to develop a target on a blog site. Blogs attract fewer people who are "looking" because the action is faster elsewhere.

Hi teal; at the end of the documentary it was revealed that the Facebook scammer was still on Facebook but she now uses her real photo, but I bet she's still trying to predate people; it seems to be her innate personality. She has a talent to string vulnerable people along.

Such naivety can feel delusions and disappointment and worse....

Hi marta; the guy who was scammed by the Facebook con artist was such a nice guy and was so disappointed, I felt so sorry for him.

I think on this particular blog spot that we are pretty honest. I may not
let a lot of personal details go public but it is what it is.

Hi jeri; You are honest and straightforward and that is appreciated! I think the MyBloggers folks who stay in contact here are the same way too.

I think Facebook is just an extension of chat rooms brought to the next level. It is easy to be superficial on that site. I once pretended to be a teen in a teen chat room and this kid, an aggressive smart type, thought I sounded great (well, I had years on him, of course, I sounded hip) and he's quizzing me because he's curious, so, I thought, enough and I jumped out of the room and he followed me into a room for 50-plus and messaged me. I was a regular in that room and had "ops" (privileges) and he said, "how come you've got ops?" meaning in that particular room and I messaged back, "older people like me."

Meeting Internet friends in person has probably destroyed a lot of good online friendships. Someone needs to write a movie script where the fat lady hires a good-looking friend to meet the guy so he'll never find out the truth, and then ... fill in some more cliche situations.

Hey you've got the basis of the next Hollywood movie! What a convoluted tale that would be!

There's also a country song by the same guy who did "I'm gonna miss her"--a song about a guy who goes fishing even after his woman tells him she'll leave if he does. The song on this subject is "So much cooler online". I went and looked on youtube. The guy's name I Brad Paisley.

Hi jj; I suppose everyone tries to be a bit cooler online and skew the real person, all I can say is Ain't that something?

Guess this is a fat lady or people story.Yes,I am sure that this can happened.
People also doctored up their photo etc.Lie about their age etc.
This is called "Attention"they are craving for this.Someone who will listen.
Oh!well glad that they not going to check me out as I lied about my age.
I am only 29Now is this a true one or a story?

Oh, so you really look like a movie star and you are 29? Who would have guessed?
The more the story unrolled about the Facebook woman who told such involved lies, the more you realize she must have mental problems and lots of need for Attention!
