You Can Let Go 20081011

Yesterday on the way to work, I was flipping channels and came across one I hadn't heard before that was just starting, "You Can Let Go", by Crystal Shawanda. I had to look it up today to find out who it was. It did it again as I watched the video on YouTube a few minutes ago. Even though I have only done one of the three letting goes in the song, it since had me teary eyed through the song. I don't think Kitty is attached me to as this woman is to her "daddy". I hope that Kitty and I have something like this as she gets older and we don't become strangers like my parents and me.

Wind blowin' on my face
Sidewalk flyin' beneath my bike
A five year-old's first taste
Of what freedom's really like
He was runnin' right beside me
His hand holdin' on the seat
I took a deep breath and hollered
As I headed for the street

Chorus
You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Oh, I think I'm ready
To do this on my own
(It's still) (It still feels) a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go

I was standin' at the altar
Between the two loves of my life
To one I've been a daughter
To one I soon would be a wife
When the preacher asked,
'Who gives this woman?'
Daddy's eyes filled up with tears
He kept holdin' tightly to my arm
'Til I whispered in his ear

(Repeat Chorus)

It was killin' me to see
The strongest man I ever knew
Wastin' away to nothin'
In that hospital room
"You know he's only hangin' on for you"
That's what the night nurse said
My voice and heart were breakin'
As I crawled up in his bed, and said

You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Your little girl is ready
To do this on my own
It's gonna be a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go
You can let go

I understand. I'm hoping that you can take your experiences and lessons learned to build a better relationship with Kitty. Maybe you cannot salvage the relationship with your parents but you can make a long lasting one with your daughter.

I guess moving 2,000 miles away from my father made him realize that I can remove him from my life if I chose to do so. Plus my brother verbally b'slapped him telling him that he was being a fool and driving me away emotionally and physically. We both chose to move on from our past and build a new relationship. I think it's helped me in many aspects of my life.

But some things are easier to forgive than others.

There's always hope. FYI my father and I had a falling out while I was in college but rebuilt our relationship as adults when I was 24. Mostly because I realized that I had to forgive him all the mistakes that were made and that he will always be my father so I worked hard to make us better friends. We talk every weekend for an hour or two
