The Vicktory Dogs

Everyone remembers when a lot of abused pit bull dogs were rescued from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels. Many believed they should all be put down, including PETA. But 22 of these dogs made it to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary just outside Kanab, Utah, where my wife works, and where dedicated people REALLY care about animals. It is a heart-warming success story. Here is one of the dogs, Georgia, adopted by Amy:

Since arriving at Best Friends in January, 2008, ten of the 22 have been so fully rehabilitated, like Georgia, that they have been adopted out to good, caring homes. Like all dogs, these pit bulls crave safety and comfort and companionship. They are just as loving as other dogs.

Here's Handsome Dan, adopted by Heather:

Most of the remaining dogs at Best Friends must pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test before they can be adopted. It can take time for a dog to understand that no one will ever hurt him again.

I didn't think that potential aggression against humans would be the biggest challenge the rehab people had to overcome. It's the dog-to-dog aggression that would be harder to eliminate.

They have had to be very careful about where they housed these dogs and what period of time it would take to socialize them with other dogs.

I am happy for their second chance but I don't think they should go to
homes with children. I loathe Michael Vick.

Hopefully no catastrophes will occur.

I think pit bulls are bred to fight, aggression is in their DNA, and I don't trust them, particularly ones that spent their early life being abused and trained to fight. But I guess the animal sanctuary knows what they are doing, so if you say it's good news it must be.

It's good news for the dogs any way you look at it. Whether they are sufficiently deprogrammed only time will tell.
