Here I go again--off on another rant. This time it's about how to save money at the grocery store.
Yes, as often the case, an Oprah promo enticed me to tune in to hear what was being said on how some families save money. Mostly, it was the same ol', same ol'.
The one that struck me was the "coupon lady". She was buying 3-4 Sunday papers just for the coupons. I have issues with using coupons to save money:
1. Coupons are almost always for name brands. Generic usually still comes out cheaper. But some shoppers insist on name brands. Whatever. Compare ingredients, like in aspirin brands, and you'll find no difference. Walmart's Equate is much cheaper than Bayer, for example.
2. Some grocery stores (super markets) are just plain downright cheaper. I go to Aldi. Here's a case in point. They don't sell generic Grape Nuts Flakes, one of my favorite cereals, so I stopped at a super K-Mart for a box. I happened to notice Kellogg's Corn Flakes (18 oz) sold for $3.99. A dollar coupon--even doubled--drops it to $1.99. But at Aldi, I buy the same size for $1.15. Yes, one dollar and fifteen cents. Kmart also had a special of 5 boxes of Cheerios for $10. Two bucks a box sounds good, but I get generic Cheerios for $1.49. Tastes great.
I could go on and on with all kinds of products. You have to look around. Skim milk at Aldi is $2.49, but at the gas station, it's $1.99. Just don't go out of your way wasting gasoline for a few cents.
These Oprah savers have nothing on me. You're looking at one of the all time penny pinchers. The stories I could tell!
