No, it's not about the "big one that got away".
Whenever I eat fish (like last night), I have the smug satisfaction that I'm doing something good for my body. It's the OMEGA-3 fat in fish that is a "wonder food". It's much more than a well-known tonic for the heart.
--I won't go into the scientific explanations of how it works, but supposedly fish fat/oil blocks certain cancers like kidney and colorectal.
--Higher blood levels of omega-3 helps build bones and reduce osteoporosis and fractures for people in all ages.
--Taking fish oil and exercising spurs weight loss without cutting calories or changing your diet. (I guess if you eat more fish, you would be changing your diet.)
--Fish oil (real or supplement) reduces the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and other painful ailments.
--And finally, fish oil is a natural antidepressant. We can all benefit from being upbeat.
So where do you get this wonder drug? Eat fatty fish (salmon, herring, tuna, sardines, mackerel) two or three times per week. Personally, I eat sardines every two days at lunch. I have mixed feelings about eating fish because of the ocean resource depletion, so I monitor which fish I eat. (I worry about mercury, too.)
Fish oil supplements are also mandatory for good health-- one a day for yours truly. With my garlic pills, they make a potent combination for bad breath! No wonder women run from me. It's a choice!
