A Day with the Ex's

Yesterday, I went to a graduation party. It was for my niece, "K" whom is also my Goddaughter, from my first marriage.

For the past 11 years since my divorce, I have maintained precious few of my friendships with members of my ex-husband's family. Throughout the years, there have been several issues and battles to overcome regarding these continued relationships. I am very close to 2 of my ex-husbands brothers and their wives. These two wives are my BEST friends. And despite disapproving comments, lectures and the occasional silent treatment from my ex-husband and his 2nd wife, towards the brothers and their wives, "we" are all closer than ever.

And although I've been tight with some "ex-in-laws" all these years, I have avoided for one reason or another 99% of "ex family functions" that I have been invited to.

But yesterday was different. The parents of my niece "K" are Godparents to my oldest daughter. They were maid of honor and best man when I married my ex-husband. So when, my ex-sister-in-law (who I now refer to as "sisters by choice") insisted that I come to "K"'s grad party, I never even hesitated, that indeed, I/we would attend.

And.... it.... was...... fine.....

My two youngest kids are/were with their Dad this weekend. Our oldest daughter (and her daughter) went to the party with my husband and I. Aside from numerous sporting events and the occasional religious sacrament, my ex-husband and I have not been in the same vicinity of one another in for ever. For unknown laughable reasons, our two youngest kids seemed to think there was going to be some type of shoot-out at the OK Corralle with their Mom and Dad (and Step parents) in close proximity.

But.... again.... it..... was...... fine.....

Everyone was civil... gracious even. My ex-mother-in-law made a point of spending some time with me. (There was a time when she couldn't/wouldn't come near me.) My ex-husbands wife spoke to me briefly about my son needing braces. I spoke to and with everyone who ever meant and/or still means something to me, except for my ex-husband. He and I are still "not there yet"...

But maybe... someday.... we will be...
