Can't Buy Me Love

Escaped from L. A.

I escaped from LA for the weekend... of course truth be told, I love Los Angeles despite what others may say... this city ROCKS!

But it was nice to change the scenery for a couple days. I did my first trip on Amtrak. It was cool to watch the ocean out my window once we got closer to San Diego County. It was a short walk from the station in Downtown San Diego to the Convention center where I met up with Hans and his GF. They had a free pass for me to get in.

We walked around and tried to get into some panels. All day the lines were too long and they didn't clear the ballrooms after each panel so no one was getting into anything. There were about 125,000 people there on Saturday. That kinda sucked. We did walk the expo floor and had fun doing so:

My mom would have loved this convention. I'm really gonna have to bring her one year, maybe I'll push her around in a wheelchair so she won't have to walk so much. My feet were dying by the end of the day and my ankle hurt from too much standing. If I haven't mentioned it before, my mom is one of the biggest sci fi geeks I know. (and I know a LOT of geeks!). She wouldn't buy a costume, or go to a convention but she is up on the current news and latest shows. We have a lot of fun chatting about our favorites on the weekends.

Thom thought I took her for granted but he had no idea how much I treasure the time I get to spend with my mom. When I go home for Thanksgiving week, the bulk of my time is spent with her and not my father. My father usually dominates the weekend phone calls, which Thom would overhear and sometimes join in, but once in a while my mom and I bore my father with our geek talk and he'll get off the phone. LOL!

I made a point to take photos for my mom at the convention... see above.

I also got a few celeb shots:

My absolute favorite moment of the weekend was when we were walking around at lunch and spotted David Tennant. Paul asked if we could get photos and Mr Tennant was more than happy to oblige us. I just love that "Dr Who" is wearing a Millennium Falcon T-shirt.

I finally got to go to Joe's Crab Shack. My parents and I were gonna go in April but didn't make it. Paul, his GF and I sat at the bar and I got the spoils of too much Margarita from the bartender. Score!

After the let-down of not getting into any panels but one, we decided to skip Sunday and hang out in Encinitas, a small beach community, instead.

It was a relaxing and chill Sunday filled with pancakes, the beach, a hammock, a hot tub to soak my tired feet, mimosas, and some frozen yogurt. I also got a tour of the hostess' organic garden and her worm farm that produces rich organic soil which I found fascinating.

We all rode back to LA on the Surfliner and three rows in front of us sat Nathan Fillion, more known for his role as the Captain on Firefly. We however did not bother him for a photo op since the convention was over and he, like ourselves, was probably just looking forward to getting home. But boy is he handsome in person!

The kitty cats were happy to see me, so much so that I didn't get much sleep as they took turns waking me up to get attention all night. Rigby was a good girl all weekend and used her litter box. Schwoooo!

A great weekend overall, but I sure could use a nap today.
