It's Time to Get the Hell Out of Dodge!

Severe water rationing is now in effect in Dallas.  Most households can only water two days a week, and that could be curtailed even more. Dallas County is from 9 to 11 inches below normal rainfall for the year while Denton County, where I live, is 19 inches below normal.
July saw no rain at all in Denton County while Dallas had only .10 of an inch. We had 30 straight days of triple digit temperatures.  Only 1980 was worse, with 31 days of 100 or better.  July set a record for high low temperatures with the nights never falling out of the 80's.
August is even hotter so far with the temperatures now going routinely above 105.
Even worse than the water rationing is the very real possibility that we may start experiencing "rolling blackouts", intervals lasting from 15 to 45 minutes with no power.  That is due to the drastic overload on Texas' electrical infrastructure,  now severely compromised due to incessantly high demand from the unrelenting heat.
Patrons are being urged to turn their thermostats up, to cook as sparingly as possible, and to turn off unused lights and fans.
I think we have the wrong idea here in America.  While Europeans traditionally go on holiday in August, Americans hit the roads most frequently in June.  We should adopt the attitude to "get the hell out of Dodge" in August rather than June.  Then all of us should head to Colorado, or Canada, or Alaska, or Seattle, or ANYWHERE but the South.

Sorry you have to go through this. Spoke with a friend in Chicago two days ago. She said it had been 105 degrees. The heat has hit the entire country.

'Emily' did bring us a present today--rain! A slow, but steady, drizzle all day but is is so slow it is evaporating as it falls though in the last hour the temp dropped to 78 degrees!!! In August??????

That is awful! Guess I will not complain about the weather in Florida.

I don't know how you deal with that heat. it's been bad here but not like texas is having. come visit your friends on the east coast!

If I could afford to, I'd be on a plane tomorrow.

I really believe these are cycles that nature has been through for thousands of years. It'll all come back around. Dry times and flood times and some times in between. There are some minor upsides to all of this they're hard to find under the glaring hot Oklahoma (Texas) sun. Vacation anywhere cool sounds wonderful!

We have one of these horrible summers about every twenty years. I would love to be in Colorado right now.

I think of you every day as the constant news and weather reports talk about your insufferable temperatures. It is very hot here in Northwest Ohio as well, but you all are boiling. I can't wait for fall.

It has been a summer from hell, Marty.

We have been under water restrictions for 2 years--we just had 12 minutes of rain and the streets are dry already--plus the humidity is going HIGH!
comment by greatmartin on Aug 6, 2011 1:58 PM ()
So, I guess the entire South must be in drought mode.

Wyoming is a nice place, plenty of open space. Texans should feel right at home, more so than Colorado.

Wyoming sounds wonderful right about now. In fact, just about anywhere other than Texas or Oklahoma sounds wonderful. We are now competing with places like Dubai and Saudi Arabia for the highest temperature. One day last week we had the highest temperature in the world.

Come to New England,we are doing fine. Now and then humidity kicks up.
Right things are bad there and hoped that you get some relief soon.
Do not fret,it will get wet.Oh!hell what did I say?
I am not trying to be dishy, just trying to get some laugh from you and others.Yes,we have been hearing this for quite some time.Lo siento

The Yukon. See it now while it is still rather 'wild' before climate warming makes it the best corn and cotton growing region in about 50 years.

Wouldn't doubt it one bit, given the extremes we keep having here, both in winter and summer.
