I read an article in today's Dallas Morning News about the role that the social media has played in politics and will play in the upcoming election. Certainly, the millions of people on their social posts, on Facebook, and on Twitter have had a major influence in the past.
Social "mediaists" helped advance the tea party agenda as well as the Occupy Wall Street movement; they helped expose Glenn Beck as an unbalanced liar, leading to the defection of huge numbers of advertisers and fans, which finally led to his dismissal from Fox News.
The social media has had a huge impact as well on the race for the Republican Party Presidential campaign. There is little doubt their efforts had a great deal to do with Michelle Bachman's, Rick Perry's, Herman Cain's, and Newt Gingrich's fall from favor.
Bachman couldn't remember in which state the Revolutionary War began, Perry couldn't remember his own name most of the time, Cain couldn't remember to keep his hands to himself, and Gingrich couldn't remember to keep his pecker in his pants. The social media not only continuously satirized them for these weaknesses; they had a heck of a lot of fun doing it....me included!
Romney, still hanging around, can't seem to remember whether he's a Republican or a Democrat.
Now, it's Rick Santorum's turn, who believes a rabbit foot, a crucifix, and a horseshoe are the best means of birth control for a woman. The jokes about Santorum are limitless!!
Eventually, somebody will HAVE to win the Republican nomination, if, for no other reason than that he will be the last man standing.
Then the real battle will begin as that candidate squares off against incumbent President Barak Obama. Obama has a much stronger base among the social media than any of the Republicans. The social media helped elect Obama last time, and I expect they will play a huge role in this election as well.
Should be fun.....and bloody!!!
