It's a Sad Situation

Beneath the rule of men entirely great,
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 1873), Richelieu

I wonder if anyone who posts here or on other sites has ever evaluated what he writes or asked himself if his writing really matters.  Not that it has to matter.

But, for me it does! I'm not an exceptionally talented person...I can't sing...I can't crochet or knit....I can cook, but I'm far from a Julia Childs...I have some athletic talent, but I'm too short to have ever been successful at the college level.

However, I do have ONE talent!  I can write!  Now, I'm not a  waxing poet nor a short story whiz nor a gripping novelist!  Nope!  None of those!

What I am is an essayist!  Now, that's about as exciting for most people as watching clothes dry.

If you don't believe me, check to see who has by far the most hits here.  It is not I, although I often discuss crucial issues.  Far and away the most popular blogger on this website is Marg (Nittineedles)

That only serves to prove that knitting is much more interesting to people than whether we will have a social security cut, whether Obama will be a one-term President, or whether the taxes on the rich will ever get rolled back. (No offense, Marg)

On Marg's heels is Panthurdreams with his tales of beautiful Hawaii, where he lives.

Then, wonder of wonders, I usually come in a distant third behind these two!  Sometimes, Fredo, jd or Mrs. Troutbend even beat me out of third.

The most hits I can muster in a day, according to my hit counter, is between 100 and 110.  However, I cannot lie.  That also includes hits I get on my other blogging site.

I'll tell you JUST HOW PATHETIC  THE SITUATION IS!  I even get knocked off the podium from time to time by Children's Allergy Center, which is written in some foreign language.

Now, that's the ultimate disgrace...to be relegated down the popularity pole by wido 25:  Here's just a sample of his post:
SEMUA ARTIKEL DI SITUS INI TELAH KADALUARSA DAN TELAH DI UPDATE DAN DIPERBAHARUI DI SITUS KAMI YANG BARU , SEBAIKNYA ANDA SEGERA KLIK https://childrenallergyclinic.wordpress.com/ children’s ALLERGY CLINIC JL TAMAN BENDUNGAN ASAHAN 5 BENDUNGAN HILIR JAKARTA PUSAT, JAKARTA INDONESIA 10210 PHONE : (021) 70081995 – 5703646 email : judarwanto@gmail.com https://childrenallergyclinic.wordpress.com/

I guess the guy is in Jakarta.  This came from his home page.  So, this must be Indonesian or some such language.  All I can say is that there  must be a heck of a lot of kids over there with allergies!  Either that or he is sending clandestine messages around the world!  Now, that's an interesting thought, isn't it?

Either way, I'm being beat on a fairly regular basis by some guy who doesn't even post in English!!

So, I've been forced to take a really hard look at whether I'm really making a difference.  To do that, I went back to my hit counter!  Here's what I found!

I discovered that I have had over the past four or five years visitors from 170 countries. ( https://www.web-stat.com/stats/list_coumtries.pl?loginID=BmBACMCoASwAAAx-NNQAAAAF&n_lines=100) That's encouraging!

The other thing that I discovered is that 99 per cent of my readers are "new".  They usually arrive at my website after googling a topic on which I have previously written.  Nothing wrong with that either.  That is, until I took a look at WHAT THEY WERE GOOGLING!

Like to know what the top three most popular posts the last two years were?  It's NOT GOOD, FOLKS!  It's NOT GOOD AT ALL!   My Bruce Jenner post took first, followed closely by the "angel" post.  Remember when I wrote about the Siamese twins who were joined for life because they could not be separated?  That was third!

So, what do we have?  A quasi-celebrity and his dysfunctional family, some supernatural creatures that a lot of people don't even believe exists, and what would be considered a freak show at a carnival.  THAT IS DEPRESSING!

I'm trying to decide whether this is a commentary on just HOW BAD A WRITER I REALLY AM or a statement on how disinterested people are in serious topics.

Either way, it's a sad situation.

Sad!  Sad!  Sad!

We are all friends here. We share a kind of computer magic. Some of us laugh and some of us cry in our blogs . One reason Marg's blogs and comments are so popular is her absolutely wicked sense of humor.

Very true. I wrote this in jest. I think some people thought I was serious.

To knit or not to knit.MY dear love. Please do not worry about this and understand this very well.In matter of fact I did had a post many years ago why is Marge the top one there. You are right people are knitters there and she has pattern of these people and they seemed to loved her.
But,I say but.Forget about this and continued on what you are doing.
Your doing a fine job.I envy you as I am not half the writer that you are.
I loved to write. But do not have the talents that you have.
Martin, has a very good comment there for you.
Continued what your doing.Funny a couple of weeks ago I was no.1.Are they serious.I would love to write more on my life, but do not know where to start. My grammar is not all that good and this bothers me at times.
In matter of fact when I met Mike it was terrible.Mike was the one to saved me and did a good job on my grammar.Yes,I do have an high school ed.but this is nothing to compare the education that you have.
So,stop beating your self up and continued on what you are doing.
We all love you here at mybloggers. Can I give you a big
Does this help anyYou know that you are loved.
Take care and keep us informed on anything that you do.
Your post are interesting and they loved you.Okay!i'll stop.
One note:many times on some of the articles that you wrote may be a little heavy for me.Heavy mean that I really do not know what to say in the comment box and not to make an ass out of my self.
comment by fredo on Jan 25, 2011 11:21 AM ()
Oh, Fredo! You could never make an ass of yourself in my eyes. You are too sweet a guy!I really wrote this more as a joke than anything, although, like everyone, I enjoy having my posts read.

I am a fan of your blogs and your writing. I think you are a very talented and intelligent lady and your write very articulate and well researched topics and are not afraid of negative responses. I think you're great.

I am totally different, I didnt realize I even liked writing until I started writing my life stories at blogster. I hated writing at school...hated writing essays more than anything. But I have to say, once I started writing my stories, I found it very therapeutic and enjoyable.

I have always loved to write, which is why I majored in English and journalism. Teaching my students to write well was the most rewarding part of my teaching career. This post was satire; but as with all satire, it does have a subtle point to make.

And I have to learn to edit my comments!! It should be life not live--just one of the many mistakes--but you read it anyway! And that should be 'does not take up closet space'!
PS Stop driving yourself with counts, hit counters, number of hits, in fact stop obsessing with numbers!
I read whatever you write and that is all that counts not to mention I have learned a lot!
comment by greatmartin on Jan 24, 2011 9:48 PM ()
You write because you like to write and you do a good job--all that is THE bottom line--no, not how many people read you or where the readers live--you have no idea whose live you have changed by just one of your
essays.
I basically write to continue my diary keeping and it does take up closet space--I write for me--don't get me wrong--I like when people read and comment on my posts but that is not how I judge my 'success.
By the way--and I love Dale and he knows it--but panthurdreams posts are mainly of movies he and David watch or the endless songs of Tori Amos--most of the Hawaiin pictures that are posted are by him and David under daboz.
No, you are not a bad writer by any means--people are not interested in serious topics--most blog to get away from the outside world and all its problems--they blog to share their lives, to vent, to talk about their hobbies, likes and dislikes, the hard time they might be having or the funny incident that happened and yes even about their beloved grandchildren--ring a bell?
comment by greatmartin on Jan 24, 2011 9:43 PM ()
I don't really take myself all that seriously. This is just a little tongue-in-cheek comment. I thought it might jazz up my essays a bit if I added some humor.
