It's a Saab Story

On first inspection, one might think by the title that this post could be about cars...the Saab, in particular.

But it's not!  It's about a young Lebanese man who was born in Beirut and lived through war years in his youth,  Now he could have become a soldier, even a terrorist, coming fron that environment.
What he actually became, and still is, is one of the premier fashion designers in the world.  And he did it all by starting and keeping his headquarters and first salon in Beirut.
Celebrities, the wealthy, and royalty around the world now wear his creations.
Elie Saab (Arabic: إيلي صعب) (born July 4, 1964), sometimes known simply as 'ES', is a Lebanese fashion designer.
In 1982, Saab launched his Beirut-based fashion label when he was 18 years old. His main workshop is in Lebanon, a country to which he remains deeply attached. He also has workshops in Milan and Paris.
Born to Maronite Catholic[1] parents in Beirut, Saab is self-trained. He started sewing as a child and knew that one day he would make a living out of it.
In 1981 he moved to Paris to study fashion, but ended up returning and opening his workshop in 1982. In 1997 Saab was the first non-Italian designer to become a member of the Italian Camera Nazionale della Moda, and in 1997, showed his first collection outside Lebanon in Rome.
In 1998, he started ready-to-wear in Milan, and in the same year, he held a fashion show in Monaco which was attended by Princess Stéphanie of Monaco.
He became an overnight success after he became the first Lebanese designer to dress an Oscar winner, Halle Berry, in 2002.[2] Berry wore a burgundy gown by Saab to the 2002 Academy Awards when she won for Best Actress. Berry later wore another dress by Saab, this time a gold dress, to the 2003 Oscars.
In May 2003, the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture invited him to become a member, and he showed his first haute couture collection in Paris in July 2003. His first ready-to-wear collection in Paris was the Spring-Summer 2006 collection, and Paris is now his permanent ready-to-wear runway.
His creations can be found all over the world, with boutiques located in Beirut, Paris and London (Harrods).
Saab has dressed notable celebrities such as Beyoncé,[3] Aishwarya Rai,[4] Anna Kendrick,[5] Christina Aguilera,[6] Catherine Zeta-Jones,[3] Queen Rania of Jordan[3] Angelina Jolie,[7] and Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.[8]

Saab still makes his home in Lebanon, living with his wife and three children in a retreat in the mountains of the country.,

I looked at his 2011 collection. I like best fabrics without fuss, so prefer the unadorned ones. Some of his fussy fabrics work best when not used with fussy lines as well. And his very see through items when they involve the entire dress are not my taste at all. When he does it right (for me, that is), he is fabulous.

Happy to see someone defying stereotypes. I wish him well.

Of course, I had to Google him to check out his designs. His gowns are beautiful and he does not seem to resort to exposing a lot of flesh to make a dress both sexy and beautiful.

No, his dresses are classy. The dress that Crown Princess Victoria wore to the wedding was one of his designs.

stereotypes impede thinking. I am glad to hear of someone outside Paris
making a name for himself.

He really has done it his way! And he is hugely successful.

not all middle Easterners are terrorists, and this is a good example of how people shouldn't be judged.

Absolutely. He is trying his best to change the image of Beirut by keeping his headquarters for his fashion line, Elie Saab, in the city.

Oh, the photos of his designs I've seen are stunning, including Halle's gown. But I never knew his history. Fun to read!

Thanks, Marta. I thought it was quite interesting as well. Crown Princess Victoria is a huge fan. She wears more of his creations than any other designer's.

Strange, I always that Saab was a Swedish name. I remember the dress Halle Berry wore but never knew the designer. WOW!

The Saab automobile is built in Sweden, so it's a natural assumption.

He looks nice and friendly.

He wants to change the negative image that his country has. It is one reason he keeps his home fashion house in Beirut.
