How Ridiculous is This???

All right, folks!  Line forms to the right!  All those accused of slapping a horse go directly to jail; do not pass "go" and do not collect $200 dollars.
Sound ridiculous?  Well, no more so than this story out of St. Petersburg, Florida, where Stephanie Six recently spent over twelve hours in jail for allegedly doing just that....slapping a horse!  Poor thing!  The horse, of course!
If convicted, Ms. Six will not only NOT collect her $200 but instead could face a fine of up to $1000 and a year in jail.  Remind me NEVER to slap a horse!
Now, Ms. Six pleads innocent of these grievous charges, stating that suddenly the horse was right in her face , so she merely gave the pony's  face a shove.  I guess one might call it a face-to-face confrontation!
This confrontation may not have occurred at the OK Corral, but it was a bit of a showdown nonetheless.  Seems the police were using mounted riders outside a tavern for crowd control when the dastardly deed apparently occurred.
"They're saying I slapped this horse when that's not the case," said Six. "I was basically getting it out of my face. I did not hit him."
As one who has felt like slapping a horse a few times myself, particularly after one turned around and bit my butt as I was saddling him, I'm torn on this issue.  Seems the police might have over reacted just a bit.  Of course, she and the horse may have got into a shouting match or something before the alleged "slapping." That could make it a completely different ballgame, especially if that horse were cursing!!
They call that extenuating circumstances, I think!

And yet, adults get away with slapping their spouses or kids around. No justice.

I have been up close and personal with a lot of horses but it pays to give
them your respect.

There were a few times during my many riding years when an inexperienced rider in the barn temporarily got a bit overwhelmed and frustrated by a boisterous horse or pony, and help was always quickly at hand. I have to say slapping or pushing a horse's face would be ineffectual and might well result in a bite, as well as frequent retelling over drinks to everyone's amusement. I suspect this lady was not used to being around horses either!

bsolutely! All it is going to do is anger the horse, and the individual is the one who will end up on the short end of that stick!

I think the law was overreacting. And where were they when a cop shot a dog because he was barking? (Recent story in this area.)

I agree! In an altercation between a horse and a human, the horse is going to win every time.

Reminds me of the last time I sla...make that pushed the cat's face out of a bowl of ice cream I was trying to eat. Sometimes one has to move quickly and decisively and observers might misconstrue the nature and intent of the action.

Drastic situations can call for drastic measures!! I wouldn't want a horse right in my face either.

I'll bet you can relate to what Laura(Troutbend) has to say about this. I know I can.

I am glad she had to go to jail for that.

I know you are a great animal lover; but don't you think you might have reacted quickly too if you were in a crowd and suddenly found a horse right in your face? These are big animals; they can do serious damage to a human.
