Do People Become Angels After Death?

  • Some people believe that when a person's physical body perishes that he becomes an angel.

But angels are not glorified human beings. Matthew 22:30 explains that they do not marry or reproduce like humans, and Hebrews 12:22-23 says that when we get to the heavenly Jerusalem, we will be met by “myriads of angels” and “the spirits of righteous men made perfect”—two separate groups.
Angels are a company or association, not a race descended from a common ancestor (Luke 20:34-36). We are called “sons of men,” but angels are never called “sons of angels.”
In fact, God created the angels before he created the physical universe.  In the book of Job, we read:
“Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone - while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7).

Notice the wording "ALL the angels shouted for joy." All the angels already existed at the time God created the world.

HOW DO ANGELS COMPARE TO HUMAN BEINGS?

ARE ALL ANGELS GOOD?

Sorry! You can't trust every angel.
The Bible classifies some angels as “elect” (1 Timothy 5:21) or “holy” (Matthew 25:31; Mark 8:38). All angels were originally holy, enjoying the presence of God (Matthew 18:10) and the environment of heaven (Mark 13:32).
Other angels oppose God under the leadership of Satan (Matthew 25:41; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6; Ephesians 6:12). We often call these “demons.”
There is actually a great unseen conflict raging that goes beyond anything we can imagine. It is not, however, a fight between two equal and eternal forces. God who created all beings is still in charge, and once He has used wicked angels to accomplish His purposes, He will bring them to a final defeat.

WHAT IS THE JOB DESCRIPTION FOR AN ANGEL?

We don't know whether every angel carries out the same tasks, or whether some of them specialize in certain areas. The Bible does speak about classes of angelic beings like cherubim (Ezekiel 1) and seraphim (Isaiah 6). We also know the names of two notable angels: Michael (Daniel 10:13; Jude 9) and Gabriel (Daniel 9:21; Luke 1:19,26).
The unnamed angels who appear most often in Scripture carry out a variety of tasks—all designed to serve God…

My faith goes back to my youth and has grown with each trial I have faced in my adult life.

It's sad that people spend so much time on metaphysics at the expense of the present. Whether angels exist or not makes a difference only in the mind of the believer (or non-believer who bothers with the question). Even God is credited with saying, "I am that I am". No past and no future, just now. Agnostics often say that there is no harm in believing just in case there's some sort of truth to it, but the harm is in living in a future place that may not exist at all when the energy would be better spent now. But, to each his own, Merry Christmas.

As the longtime athiest W.C. Fields, sick and near death, told a friend who came to say good-bye and found Fields reading the Bible. When he asked Fields why, he replied, "I'm looking for loopholes!"

I believe with all my heart that it will. As a matter of fact, I am betting my life on it!

I wouldn't trust my loved ones, or most other people I've met for that matter, to be my guardian angel. I'd rather take pot luck on these angels that started out as angels, had training, and get a lot of experience.

Me too! I definitely want one of the experienced guys...no novice for me!! I need all the help I can get.

I never thought people became angels after death. A long time ago someone showed me the reference to Guardian angels but that was so many decades ago that I forgot it. I do wonder if we each have guardian angels.

I believe that saved Christians do indeed have guardian angels. Most theologians agree that there are as many angels as there are all the people who will inhabit the earth based on the description of the number of angels listed in Revelation. Also, one of the roles of angels is to answer people's prayers. However, we must ask for our guardian angel to stay close with us and protect us. They await our calling.

We may never know.
comment by tealstar on Dec 22, 2010 6:26 AM ()
Oh, we will know. For now we live by faith. But we have the promise of knowing it all one day:" For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV). Every answer to every question we have can be found in the Bible.

Admittedly, I skimmed through this. Did you ever read "Soul Survivor"? That'll make a nonbeliever rethink his position on afterlife!
comment by solitaire on Dec 22, 2010 6:21 AM ()
I have not read "Soul Survivor", but I will look for it and read it. I must say that Teal's comment that God is not kind and generous saddens me, because the Bible teaches us just the opposite of that. But only after one has read and studied it does he fully grasp that even the Old Testament reveals over and over again that God is a loving and forgiving God. However, he is also a just God. He is the same yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever. We WILL be judged by our time here on earth, which is nothing more than preparation for eternity. I was taught to love the Lord but to fear his wrath. Make of that what you will. I know what it means for me.

Really? If only. It would be comforting if one could count on seeing loved ones again. If I were doing it, I would have managed things differently. I would have made it possible to always have a connection as part of life, a real connection. But, then, I am kind and generous and God is not.
