Oklahoma Plummets to Minus 31 Degrees

Oklahoma breaks record dating back to 1935 and 1905 when the temperature dropped to 27 Below zero.

Forecasters had predicted lows of minus 11 degrees in northwest Arkansas and minus 10 degrees in parts of Oklahoma. But temperatures instead dipped to minus 18 in Fayetteville and to minus 28 in Bartlesville, Okla.

Nowata, Okla., recorded 31 degrees below zero — setting a new record low for the state. The previous lowest temperature in Oklahoma history was 27 below in 1930 and 1905, said Gary McManus, associate state climatologist with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.

"We just had a very cold arctic air mass and a heavy snow pack and that allowed the temperatures to plummet when the wind died down," said McManus. "We got much colder temperatures than anyone thought would occur."

My nephew works on a ranch in northeastern Oklahoma.  I just cannot imagine how he is coping with 20 inches of snow on the ground and cattle to feed and ice to break so that the cattle have water.

Nice to see the postman still making rounds in Oklahoma.  We got no mail for four days last week.  I guess in Dallas someone forgot to remind the post offices that the "mail must go through", no matter what the weather.

When I first heard that number (-31), I figured they were talking wind chill. Evidently not! Whoa. That's cold! My town was -18 two nights ago. We're all in this together.

I know the type of clothing you wear in that type of weather differs greatly from what we wear here in GA during the winter but I do not know how a body can tolerate those kind of temperatures. How in the world did the Indians survive in those winters with no indoor heat source and only buffalo hides to keep them "warm? How do you protect your skin in those temperatures....don't you get frostbite?

I'm in Dallas now where it was a balmy 11 when Oklahoma was minus 15 and below. Fortunately, it is much warmer today both places.

Makes me glad to be living in nice, warm Canada.

I know! Isn't it the craziest thing that our temperatures were that low?

Extreme temperatures! It was the same record breaking temperatures as we had - I know Scotland had some deep freeze numbers - not too sure if they were -28, but not far from it.
The animals suffer the most, without a doubt unfortunately
Keep yourself warm and safe Joan

These temperatures were just so off the chart that it was hard to imagine they could be that low.

And South Florida plummets to 81 degrees!!!
If it helps any we learned from the last freeze that it 'eliminates' lizards and snakes.

As well as spiders and bugs. That's the only justification that I have ever found for tolerating cold snaps.

It was bad here, but fortunately not that bad.

Just unbelievably cold. I can't believe the winter Oklahoma is having. I thought last year was bad.

What a nightmare. I feel for the animals.

So do I. I am going to call my brother later today. He lives in northeastern Oklahoma to see how my nephew is faring in this weather trying to take care of the cattle.

wow....I dont know how people can live through that...I hope everyone stays safe and warm.

Lots of layers of clothing plus keeping one's face covered. Frostbite and one's skin freezing is a serious concern when the temperature gets this low.
