Midnight in Dallas

If you have ever seen the Dallas skyline at night, you know it is one of the most spectacular. Take a look!

The two most prominent buildings are the Bank of America Building in green and the Reunion Tower Ball that for years has glowed gold.

Well, all that changes tonight, New Year's Eve, when the ball will suddenly flash a myriad of colors. Watch the brief clip below, showing a test earlier.

Reunion Tower from Justin Terveen on Vimeo.

Since the new Omni Hotel opened this past summer in downtown Dallas, a "light war" of sorts has erupted.
The hotel can flash messages intermittently on its blue, reflective facade.

Not to be outdone, the city of Dallas began quietly switching out the lights in the Reunion Tower, which features a revolving restaurant inside.

Should be quite a sight tonight when officials turn the lights on permanently and the fireworks erupt over the Dallas skyline at midnight.

My fireworks consisted of a bright, starry sky last night and this morning. Good enough for me! Again, Happy New Year!

Good enough for me also. It's a beautiful New Years Day here in Big D, with temperature expected to climb into the high 60's. Sun is shining brightly and no wind. It's a good omen.

That's just neat. I like the idea of the light wars.

Yes, each is trying to outdo the other right now. Should make for some spectacular sights in downtown Dallas this year.

Yes EACH city--Fort Lauderdale, Pompano, Miami, Sunrise, Margate, etc., have fire works but I'll bet you a carrot cake there will be a story in tomorrow's paper that someone will be shot 'celebrating' New Years!!

And to you, Fredo. I'll spend a quiet evening at home watching television. As a friend of mine used to say, "I never go out on New Years Eve. That's amateur night."
reply by redimpala on Dec 31, 2011 10:41 AM ()
And we just shoot off pistols in Fort Lauderdale killing 2-3 people a year!
comment by greatmartin on Dec 31, 2011 8:44 AM ()
Are you serious? Don't they have a citywide fireworks display?
