The Heat Continues; Boehner Won't Negotiate

Kenzie takes a plunge as Dad stands at the ready in case she needs him (she didn't).
The heat wave continues.  Today's high will be 104.  I went to the pool at 7:30 with the temperature a mild 80 to swim laps.  The water was perfect.  By this afternoon it will feel like  bath water and won't even be refreshing.
I read that talks have completely broken down between the White House and Boehner.  It's so obvious what the Republican strategy is.  They want to propose a short term stop-gap rise in the debt limit at the last minute....this in spite of the fact that Obama and the Democrats have said they will not approve any proposal that does not raise the debt limit until 2012 after the elections.
If the Democrats refuse it, the Republicans can claim that it was the Democrats who threw the country into default.  On the other hand, if they accept it, it becomes an issue in the upcoming elections.
Obama has done everything but stand on his head to try to appease the Republicans, even standing ready to incur the wrath of Democrats by offering cuts to entitlements such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
The GOP, however, wants all the candy, showing its total disregard for the good of America by refusing to give an inch on the issue of taxes on the wealthy and closing the loopholes for Big Business.  In other words, Obama and the Democrats do all the giving while the Republicans smugly sit back and claim victory.
Even if a last-minute vote raises the debt limit, the powers that be have stated they will probably still downgrade the U.S. credit rating.  That will result in higher interest rates on the national debt, which, in turn, will force the debt even higher.  It will also trigger higher interest with banks, making borrowing even harder for business.  All that could throw us into another recession.
Boy, I hate it when Republicans play politics at the expense of our country and its people.  But when have they ever put the people first?  They have always catered to the whims of Big Business and the wealthy.  However, eventually enough of them usually would swing over and vote for what had to be done.
With John Boehner leading the Republicans, I don't see that happening.
What a weakling!  He has a bunch of greenhorn, rookie tea party Congressmen who are TELLING HIM what to do.   He is third in line to the Presidency.  What a catastrophe that would be!

Boy, Eddie is really getting involved here! Too bad he's on the other side.

Eric Cantor, darling of the tea party, is leading Boehner around by the nose. Boehner is too weak to stand by whatever principles he has left. I'd tell them all to go hang, and do what is right. I think that would have to resonate with the voters

I agree Boehner is weak. I just hope that when he caves, it is to Cantor and not Obama.

I think it would also. Unfortunately, he is too weak to stand up to Cantor and the rest.

It is interesting how both sides thing the other is playing politics. I am in the opinion that nothing should be done because this "fictitious" date will come and go without a hiccup. Government checks will go out as usual, and we will all carry on as usual. Stand strong Boehner!

I am concerned. Standard and Poor also said if we do not reduce our debt substantially, they will downgrade our rating. The only way that we can reduce the dept is to have the government stop spending. The only way to stop them from spending is to force them.

You are not concerned that already our credit rating is going to be downgraded by Standard and Poor, which well translate into higher interest on borrowed money. Even if ALL checks go out as usual, which I don't think they will, a lower credit rating just drives the debt higher still.

Worst. Speaker. Ever!
The ideological fringe GOP will be the ruin of the country.

If they haven't already, and I agree about Boehner. He is so weak that it is pathetic. If the people of Ohio don't throw him out of office, they are just as dumb as he is.

Flood them with e mails and better yet, letters.

I can't stand him either, Fredo. I sent him an e-mail yesterday telling him just what I thought of his actions.

Our country is in a mess and, at least for right now, too late to stop it from getting messier with the games politicians play--and yet the people who they represent let them get away with it!

I'm afraid you are right, Martin. It's going to get worse before it gets better, thanks to letting the tea baggers get elected.
