A Federal Government Shutdown Would Be an Assault on America

All of my income is Federal- SSD and VA benefits. I will definitely be up a creek!

On the news on NBC, Brian Williams reported that should the shutdown stretch into weeks or months, that social security benefits and Medicare benefits would definitely be impacted.

Seize the bank accounts of all members of Congress until they get this settled. Lock them in the Capitol building and feed them bad pizza and Mountain Dew.

I'll vote for that, and let's cut off their salaries too!!!

This is horrible. We need Ted's social security check and we need mine too. What about medicare, medicaid and all the other services that will
be temporarily stopped?. It will certainly impact the economy because
people will not be able to shop.

Social Security checks will continue unabated. Tax returns will be stopped.

I am awaiting surgery for an injured knee. As a disabled person, I, too, depend on my social security income into which I have contributed since 1972 until I was forced into disability in 2003. It is a very modest income, about $9K a year/$800 a month. I have earned the right to every penny. Now I find that, if the Social Security shuts down, I will not be able to have my surgery next week, but must postpone it until Social Security and Medicare are working again. These Tea Partiers and Republicans are inhuman bastards. They could care less whom they hurt.

You are absolutely right. I am scared to death that we are all going to be in a huge mess. I hate them.

I would like the government to be shut down for quite a while. Then perhaps our taxes would go down. I am not seeing the downside here.

As I understand it, soldiers and essential government functions would continue to be paid, no matter what. But what do I know? I've been in Mexico for six years.

You really think this is the Democrats? Stop Watching Fox News: the more you watch, the less you know.
reply by tealstar on Apr 5, 2011 5:14 PM ()
Well...we need everyone to call the Democrats and tell them to not shut down the government.
reply by eddie on Apr 5, 2011 5:01 PM ()
Eddie, do you realize how many people would be affected by this? The President and the Senate would still get paid, but all government employees would be furloughed without pay, social security checks to seniors who live on that money would be delayed, soldiers' paychecks would be delayed, government retirees checks would be delayed. It could absolutely wreck havoc on the economy.

Obama must learn to be a tougher negotiator. I am too frustrated to elaborate any further.

I agree. He needs to knock some heads together. I have said that for a long while now.

I am fuming!!
comment by marta on Apr 5, 2011 12:44 PM ()
I am not only fuming, I am frightened. I NEED my social security check to BE ON TIME as do millions of other Senior citizens.

Though not a 'good' thing it would help the Democrats--I guess Republicans don't learn from history--look what happened when Clinton & Newt went through it--you would think with Newt running for pres he would know better or does not anyone listen to him?
comment by greatmartin on Apr 5, 2011 12:21 PM ()
It probably will help the Democrats because I promise you the pressure by everyone, particularly you and me, who depend on our social security checks would be tremendous.

I have been reading this earlier.
Still do not like the house speaker.
Will see what happens.

I can't stand him. He could whip these snot-nosed egotistical tea partiers into line if he would.
