My SIL is an avowed Republican and just about as well-informed as the rest of that breed. Â He gets his "news" from Fox News Network, believing that it is true. Â And this is a man with a college degree (not that he uses it).
Here are a few choice remarks he made when I was there:
1. Â "I really believe the Tea Party has been good for America." (Yes, just about as "good for America as the KKK"!)
2. Â "Global warming is a myth; all the records that were kept have been proven to be lies." (Spare me from people this ignorant! Have you stepped outside lately? Get your heads out of the sand, ostriches!)
3."It's true! I heard it on the news." (Oh! That's reassuring, since I know exactly where he gets his "news.")
On the second point, I had just mentioned that I had recently read that we were experiencing the hottest summer worldwide on record and that the last ten had been the ten hottest since scientists began gathering data."
That's when he threw in his second "brilliant" comment. I responded by stating that I assumed he was referring to "Climategate," the e-mails conveniently leaked just before the Copenhagen conference on climate control.
When he said that he was, I asked him if he was aware that every impartial review done of the e-mails could find absolutely no evidence within them that the scientists had skewered the data....that the only criticism of them had been their reluctance to be open with the public  because they were suspicious of having it misinterpreted. It appears they had a good reason to be suspicious.
"I'd have to check that," he said.
"Well, let me help you. Â My computer is right here."
I did a query and the very first thing that popped up was a story that had appeared the day before in Business Weekly stating that the scientists had been cleared of all charges relating to skewering the data. ( www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9GQ6Q480.htm}
I then showed him about twenty other threads to articles saying exactly the same thing.
Based on that, I am going to go out on a limb that I am sure the nutwing conservatives will try to chop off. Â However, before they do, I suggest they query "Climategate."
The ONLY thing they will find in the recent articles is the need for scientists to be more open with their findings.
