In Our Own Backyards

Why is it that we never visit the historical sites in our own back yard? I am ashamed to say that I have never been to the Oklahoma City Memorial site nor the Kennedy Assassination site here in Dallas.
However, the other evening I was helping Taylor answer some questions on a history work sheet he was doing. Several of them were about Kennedy's death in Dallas..
When I mentioned the name, "Jack Ruby," he responded, "Who's that?" I forget that these infamous individuals are not "household words" to our children and grandchildren as they were to us.
Another question for which he was having trouble locating the answer was, "What was the finding of the Warren Commission?"
"That Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone," I responded.
Evidently, the class had been discussing the theories that Oswald was not the only shooter. Taylor immediately began disputing that statement, mentioning the "grassy knoll" and other "conspiracy" theory possibilities.
"I'm just telling you WHAT the correct answer is to your question should it appear on a test, Taylor," I stated.
"Now, if you want to learn about all the different theories, we need to go downtown to the museum in the old Texas Book Depository Building where, I understand, there's lots of information about all the possibilities."
So, when Holly got home, we discussed it, and we are taking all the kids to the museum tomorrow. I'm anxious to see it myself. I'll take pictures of what the curators allow us to photograph and report back.
I have been told by those who have been there that it is a very worthwhile visit.

There you go. Super!

I'm looking forward to it, and I think Taylor will learn more there than from any history book.

So glad you are going, CJ. Truly, wish I could go with you. What a wonderful opportunity. It would be so helpful to our youngsters, soon to be citizens, to understand not only what actually happened, but also to learn the difference between the truth and conspiracy theories, and how to think critically about such theories, the motives involved in hatching them, and how people are deluded. There are ample examples of current delusion to offer, sadly.

Our children need more exposure to facts and less to fantasy. I hope they will come away with a different view after today. Wish you were here also to go with us.

You simply must visit the OKC Memorial. It's brilliant and somber.

I know. I feel bad that I have not visited it. I have driven by but never gone through it.

Most eveyone who remembers the assassination knows what they were doing when they heard the news. It was devastating. I worked in the Empire State Building for the Diners' Club on the 68th fl. when I first came to New York. Later, when my editor at Harper & Row did a book about it, I wrote the flap copy for it and we gave a pub party, 30's theme, at the top. But I've not been to the Statue, unless you count sailing by it when on the ferry to Staten Island.

Yes, I can tell you exactly where I was, who told me, and what I did the rest of that entire day.

I never knew that they turned the old book repository into a museum- but it makes sense. If I ever get to Dallas, I will certainly have to see that.

I've heard it is quite outstanding and presents all the various theories without being judgmental about any of them. I'll let you know.

THIEF!!!! I wrote an article about sightseeing in Fort Lauderdale for the Gazette about New Yorkers almost boasting about never having been to the Statue of Liberty or the top of the Empire State building and that I was going to spotlight a Ft. La-De-Da sightseeing spot every month including going to the beach!!
Seriously too many people who live in Philadelphia have never seen the Liberty Bell or in St. Louis The Arch--after 40 years here I finally got to the Bonnet House, a landmark here, last year.

I know! We'll get on a plane to fly 1000 miles to see something, but we won't drive 20 miles. We are crazy people.

Those were sad, sad times in our history.

Yes, they were indeed. I hope that the trip tomorrow will give the kids some insight into how people reacted and felt back then.,
