An Accident Waiting to Happen

I've written before about Holly's problem with depth perception, but it's worth reviewing in light of what has happened recently.  All her life the child has been "an accident waiting to happen."
I still remember her "baby" days when she stayed so bruised from walking into things rather than around them that I was scared someone was going to report me for child abuse.
As she got older, I bought her a personalized set of crutches with her name engraved in bronze on them because she spent so much time with sprained ankles.  Well, okay, I didn't really have her name engraved in bronze, but I did buy her a pair of crutches that we kept handy.
She also has the distinction of being the first to fall down the stairs in the new Law Center at OU when she was an L3 and finally got to begin her final year there.
We tried glasses in her younger years.  Did no good.  She just broke her glasses then every time she missed a curb or misjudged a stairway. So, in addition to a trip to the doctor or the emergency room, we also had to make a stop at the ophthamologist's office for a new set of glasses.  The kid was expensive, to say the least.
She managed to dent both sides of her little Mustang convertible within a month that she got for her 16th Birthday.  That's when I strongly recommended that she get a job.  I could see the handwriting on the wall!
I knew we were entering a new era with Holly and her propensity toward accidents that was going to get even more expensive.
And I was right!!   I could write a book about her fender benders down through the years.   But, you are just not going to believe the level to which she has taken it in the last two months.
Remember her new, snazzy Cadillac that is OU red?  Within a month, she rear ended the back of a pick-up.  That was two weeks in the shop and a hefty repair bill for her insurance company.
Then,  last Saturday she decided to go have her nails done. An hour or so later, Bevan  gets a call that she has had a "mishap"....not an accident mind you, just a mishap... in her Caddy.
She, unfortuanately, is stuck on the median and needs Bevan to come. When she gets home, driving her car by the way, she informs us that a sign had been removed in the median where she was about to cross the highway and that she "impaled" her car on a remnant of it that was sticking out of the ground. She said it sounded as though she had damaged her muffler but other than that, she thought the car was fine.
"Well, Holly, WHAT were you doing in the median in the first place?"  I've known this child for 36 years; you'd think I wouldn't have asked such a stupid question!
"I misjudged the turn and ran up on the median," she admitted.  Now, WHY did that not surprise me??
The fire department had to use some device to lift her car off this post. She said they were very nice, by the way.  I'll bet when they got back to the fire station, they all had a huge laugh about "women drivers" though.
Tuesday, she took it to the repair shop.  Wednesday, the adjuster called to inform her that they would have to total her car....that's right, TOTAL IT!
It seems that the hole in the undercarriage is a non-repairable item because undercarriages are not made as replaceable parts.
"I loved that car," she bemoaned.  Since she paid cash for it, she will have a check by Tuesday that actually exceeds what she paid by a few dollars.
So, one would think that she would simply replace it with another like it. If you recall, the plan was to buy Bevan a new SUV next year, keeping their current SUV for him to drive until then.
Yesterday, I went over to stay with the kids while they went to the dealership.  When they came home, they stated they had decided to buy a Suburban.
Number One:  I hate them.  They look and ride like a huge truck.  No class; no style, no statement. Holly's a Cadillac kind of girl; not a suburban Fraulein.
Number Two:  I know this is Bevan's choice...not Holly's.
That's all I'm going to say other than I'm not a happy camper, and I don't think Holly will be either after she tries maneuvering that monstrosity around in traffic and tries to park and back it out of spaces.
Talk about more accidents JUST waiting to happen.  I'll just hold my breath.  At least in that tank, she probably won't get hurt. Then again, Cadillacs are very safe cars also; and believe me, she needs a SAFE car!

I know you didn't, Fredo. I just have to hold my breath and hope for the best, however. I am going to try my best to have her get another eye exam, however, and see if the doctor can't come up with some glasses that will help her depth perception.

Maybe that you should report this to the motor vehicle to get license
pulled. She is very dangerous.Whether you lose friendship that is up to you.
Do not wait for an accident to happen. You need to make a choice.

Let me get this straight? You want ME to report my daughter to the DMV and have her license pulled? You don't know my daughter. She would have me in court in five minutes time, and I would be the one who ended up looking like the fool...not her. And that would be the end of my relationship with my daughter and my grandchildren. I'm afraid that is just not going to happen.

Well, Ted has a suburban which I do not drive because it is so long it is
difficult to park. I think she should get the collision avoidance system with a add on that parellel parks the vehicle. Trade in Bevan's suv and
give him the suburban.

That makes more sense. I just don't think Holly will be happy with this thing, but I have already said too much. She knows how I feel, so now I am just trying to butt out. I promise she will be buying a different car in six months' time.

Most of the time she seems to do just fine. Then, out of the blue, she does something crazy like this latest incident. Sometimes, I wonder if it is carelessness as much as anything else.

Well, I have a lot of sympathy, as I only see with one eye and have had a problem with depth perception my whole life. In fact, I gave up driving six years ago. Given Holly's issue, I would think the Mercedes would be a good choice of car, as it has an accident avoidance system, and it's very well built with an excellent safety rating. Frankly, I'd be worried about her driving at all. She could be sued seriously in the case of an injury accident. Has she ever considered getting a driver? That would be a perfect solution.

Believe me, I would be thrilled if she hired a driver. I don't see it happening though. She drives very little on the highway. Bevan always drives when they are together. Her accidents are the type that happen in town at slow rates of speed. Most defy explanation.

This is a serious problem and I am surprised that a sophisticated medical analysis is not being done. It's not just Holly who will be hurt in a serious accident but perhaps others as well. Some new cars have AUTO COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS (Google this for info) that stop the car for you if you are about to hit something and haven't braked. Aside from that, Holly shouldn't be driving at all. If an aged relative had this kind of record, you'd take his keys away.

Holly had meningitis when she was four months old. She ran an extremely high temperature for about 12 hours until she passed the crises. I have always believed that she suffered enough trauma to her brain that she may have some permanent brain damage in the area that controls depth perception. However, we have had her depth perception evaluated several times by skilled opthamologists who insist it is normal. It may be normal but somehow in a situation where she needs to make a quick decision the message just doesn't seem to go through. Because of her high IQ in every other area, it is difficult to understand. Trying to tell her she can't drive would be absolutely impossible. She is too strong-willed for anyone to "tell" her anything. I just keep my fingers crossed and say a lot of prayers for her.

I know it's not funny, but it really is. She should talk to Rent a Wreck about leasing by the year, new cars are wasted on her.

You don't know how true that is. She "totaled" a new Ford Explorer several years ago on her way to an OU game when a massive pile-up occurred. Somehow, she always seems to come out of these deals smelling like a rose. She is going to sue the city over leaving a pole extended in the median.

She totaled OUR red Cadillac?!?!?!?!?!?!? We have to hire her a driver--will be cheaper than replacing cars!!
Seriously is there a cause,a reason, a name for what she 'has'?
comment by greatmartin on June 2, 2011 5:33 PM ()
Yes! Can you believe it?????A driver might be just the ticket. I honestly don't know if it has a name. It's a problem with depth perception.
