I've written before about Holly's problem with depth perception, but it's worth reviewing in light of what has happened recently. Â All her life the child has been "an accident waiting to happen."
I still remember her "baby" days when she stayed so bruised from walking into things rather than around them that I was scared someone was going to report me for child abuse.
As she got older, I bought her a personalized set of crutches with her name engraved in bronze on them because she spent so much time with sprained ankles. Â Well, okay, I didn't really have her name engraved in bronze, but I did buy her a pair of crutches that we kept handy.
She also has the distinction of being the first to fall down the stairs in the new Law Center at OU when she was an L3 and finally got to begin her final year there.
We tried glasses in her younger years. Â Did no good. Â She just broke her glasses then every time she missed a curb or misjudged a stairway. So, in addition to a trip to the doctor or the emergency room, we also had to make a stop at the ophthamologist's office for a new set of glasses. Â The kid was expensive, to say the least.
She managed to dent both sides of her little Mustang convertible within a month that she got for her 16th Birthday. Â That's when I strongly recommended that she get a job. Â I could see the handwriting on the wall!
I knew we were entering a new era with Holly and her propensity toward accidents that was going to get even more expensive.
And I was right!! Â I could write a book about her fender benders down through the years. Â But, you are just not going to believe the level to which she has taken it in the last two months.
Remember her new, snazzy Cadillac that is OU red? Â Within a month, she rear ended the back of a pick-up. Â That was two weeks in the shop and a hefty repair bill for her insurance company.
Then,  last Saturday she decided to go have her nails done. An hour or so later, Bevan  gets a call that she has had a "mishap"....not an accident mind you, just a mishap... in her Caddy.
She, unfortuanately, is stuck on the median and needs Bevan to come. When she gets home, driving her car by the way, she informs us that a sign had been removed in the median where she was about to cross the highway and that she "impaled" her car on a remnant of it that was sticking out of the ground. She said it sounded as though she had damaged her muffler but other than that, she thought the car was fine.
"Well, Holly, WHAT were you doing in the median in the first place?" Â I've known this child for 36 years; you'd think I wouldn't have asked such a stupid question!
"I misjudged the turn and ran up on the median," she admitted. Â Now, WHY did that not surprise me??
The fire department had to use some device to lift her car off this post. She said they were very nice, by the way. Â I'll bet when they got back to the fire station, they all had a huge laugh about "women drivers" though. Â
Tuesday, she took it to the repair shop. Â Wednesday, the adjuster called to inform her that they would have to total her car....that's right, TOTAL IT!
It seems that the hole in the undercarriage is a non-repairable item because undercarriages are not made as replaceable parts.
"I loved that car," she bemoaned. Â Since she paid cash for it, she will have a check by Tuesday that actually exceeds what she paid by a few dollars.
So, one would think that she would simply replace it with another like it. If you recall, the plan was to buy Bevan a new SUV next year, keeping their current SUV for him to drive until then.
Yesterday, I went over to stay with the kids while they went to the dealership. Â When they came home, they stated they had decided to buy a Suburban.
Number One: Â I hate them. Â They look and ride like a huge truck. Â No class; no style, no statement. Holly's a Cadillac kind of girl; not a suburban Fraulein.
Number Two: Â I know this is Bevan's choice...not Holly's. Â
That's all I'm going to say other than I'm not a happy camper, and I don't think Holly will be either after she tries maneuvering that monstrosity around in traffic and tries to park and back it out of spaces.
Talk about more accidents JUST waiting to happen. Â I'll just hold my breath. Â At least in that tank, she probably won't get hurt. Then again, Cadillacs are very safe cars also; and believe me, she needs a SAFE car!Â
