Yesterday, we went to the new Whole Foods Health (mega) Store in our town.
This place is often where the cable show, "Take Home Chef" is filmed. Curtis (the chef) goes in to snag an unsuspecting and usually attractive housewife to cook for her and her husband.
The camera crew films enough of the store where I recognized certain architectural details. We couldn't help but marvel at the way everything was packaged and on display.
Not your typical Albertson's, Ralph's, or WalMart. It's far more stylish and eco conscious. You can buy hip gear (everything made from sustainable products, of course). You have such a plethora of choices from soup to nuts.
You feel better just walking through their aisles and aisles of product. Others look self-important as they make their intentionally green choices to be, well, green-minded... carrying their canvas "Whole Foods" totes so that they won't need paper or plastic at checkout.
We looked more like Hansel and Gretl wading our way through the forest, but instead of dropping bread crumbs, we were scratching our heads trying to decide which bread crumbs to put in our carrying basket.
There is subterranean parking w/an elevator to take you to either the first or second floor. There are hairpin turns that guarantee your very large SUV is going to be scraped should you drive close to their pillars. We were glad for our little Corolla as it obediently drove us in and out w/o a scratch.
There are people walking in between cars, walkways, and dodging in front of moving cars either needing to park or exit. It kinda felt like the Disneyland parking lot as I imagine it at Christmastime. Crazy.
When we first arrived, it was 11am and quiet. Suddenly within the hour, it was as though busloads of shoppers started filing in.
We wondered whether it was b/c of the Easter holiday or the store's newness that it was so packed. I wondered whether it was b/c of an uncanny sense of timing that has often taken place w/my family and me.
Let me explain. Often (as in almost all the time), I will (or a family member who is w/me) go into a place of business, say Bank of America or Target, or (you get the idea). Usually there is maybe one person in line before or after me. But I kid you not, within 5 minutes, 5+ people will come streaming in after me. This alone will be another post for later. (I don't think I'm nuts).
Main reason we went was to get 5-HTP (tryptophan supplement). Well, talk about selection! There were no less than 9 brands alone!
Impressed by the knowledgeable salesperson, we bought a moderately priced jar of 60 tabs. Then we perused the meat section and ended up buying 2 kinds of ground turkey: white and dark.
The idea was to cook both of them up using different seasonings. We had previously bought ground turkey from Trader Joe's, but b/c of the distinct smell and flavor of their turkey, I'd drown it in strong sauces and do whatever I could to disguise it.
After cooking up the white meat last night, and the dark meat this morning, I'm happy to say that neither had that strange smell that TJ's turkey has. I seasoned both batches with evoo, garlic, onions, sea salt, and pepper. Both were tasty, so I made a batch of spaghetti sauce with one, and homemade refried beans w/the other.
All in all, not only was going to WF an adventure, it was profitable and educating.
