City of Hope

Monday, the Creative Services Director called asking if I'm interested in a temp to FT position at COH Downtown. She'll decide by tomorrow.

Are you KIDDING? I'm doing the happy dance while keeping my voice perfectly calm.

Do you have any idea how L-O-N-G this week has been for me since Monday?

Meantime - I've had interesting emails pertaining to my post on "guerilla gardening"... Yep. There IS someone in charge and I believe it was he who contacted me.

Interesting thing about it is that these generous, civic minded, anons are really making a diff in this neglected-in-pockets metropolis.

Having travelled to other lovely cities, Scottsdale, AZ, for example, one takes notice of the deliberately designed indigenous landscape. Not talking about crowded cacti, overgrown weeds, or escaped tumbleweeds.

The city planners there, having been influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen and his sensibilities, cared enough through the decades to make sure that the city's highways were carefully planned.

Majestic saguaros share the same real estate with a boulder or two resting zen-like on a generous bed of gravel. The backdrop here and there are beautifully designed Navajo symbols, not graffiti.

How is it that a city can pull off such designed beauty w/o the threat of graffiti and impending trash? I wondered if they had ordinances in place (like Singapore), where if one is caught littering or defacing (or even chewing gum?) - that a severe reprimand awaits such culprits.

Seriously. This city can learn a thing or two by observing, changing, and practicing better citizenship.
