Entertainment

According to history, the entertainment industry profits during a depression.

Since we are on our way to one, it seems evident that this is the case. The onslaught of annual Christmas movies, invitations to galas and holiday productions - all seem aimed at raising morales.

Two new evening TV shows are debuting variety entertainment (Rosie O'Donnell, Jay Leno), with more to come featuring dancing competitions. Most radios are playing horrid contemporary renditions of classics and recording artists with holiday cds... ugh.

During the Great Depression, going to the movies was a nickel. Unless you're lucky enough to have a "cheapie" theater ($1 movies) in town, prepare to shell out $7-9. Not so cheap.

Yesterday, at a diner, we listened to "old" holiday classics, which usually punctuates one's awareness as a reminder that the holidays are upon us. For some reason, it bothered all of us at the table.

It just seems that all those things that make this season "merry" are just syrup over burnt pancakes.

Guess it's all BAH for me this year.

My parents were Depression era young people. When I was growing up they always used it on me. "Eat your dinner. We never had it so good when we were your age." Etc. It stuck on me.

I don't think this will result in a "Depression," unless Congress allows the US auto industry to go under - but then it would be a depression, because unemployment will double from what it is now. The cities and counties here are already broke and are laying people off. Some don't have enough money to buy road salt this winter. When they lay off firemen and police, you know we are in deep crap.

Hard to be in the Christmas spirit with money so tight, people out of work, and the economy reeling like a drunken grandma in a rickety rocker.
