5.4 Earthquake!

11:45am, I'm sitting in a laundromat w/my Mom, chatting. Suddenly the room starts rolling sort of in a circular motion.

We look at each other and at others in the room, and like deer frozen in headlights . . .

4 seconds later, people started using their cellphones which created an overload - so no one got through until 15 minutes later.

We continued to feel aftershocks for almost 5 minutes.

Some people were pretty spooked by this and were shouting out things like: next time, run away from the glass! - or - don't run outside! - or - I'm ducking under these tables!

The motion didn't disrupt the ongoing machines, so after 5 minutes or so, life kind of continued, but after that, we could hear sirens and later, helicopters.

Once we got home, the news was all over it - every channel!
As time went on, there was more coverage on City Hall politicians who were in the middle of a meeting when their overhead lights were swaying.

It's shameful how UNprepared so many of us are, considering this is earthquake country.

Food, water, radio, and flashlight - were getting the biggest endorsement, as well as the "kits" that will now fly off the shelves.

ABC.com has been inundating us w/product that you can "get" from them... (i.e., not free). They WILL send you a freezer bag so you can put your most important documents in your freezer.

The more the news covers this, the more they're saying there's a 50% chance that this was a precursor to thee "BIG" one.

I'm just thankful that nothing fell from our building or from our apartment!

My son lives in Seattle and has experienced a few of these. He says that he moved away from the New England because of the hurricanes. My response to that is, at least with huuicanes, you have a few days' warning! (I never experienced an earthquake. I can just imagine how frightening they must be!)

I think I'd feel safer in Fla with hurricanes than in Calif with earthquakes.

I saw that on the news... had no idea you were in the area... a scary thing! Glad you guys are ok.

In Long Beach for 20-some years I had a large plastic trash barrel filled with all my earthquake kit just outside my garage. It was all tucked inside two waterproof bags and tied up with the lid secured to the barrel and taped shut. I even had six gallons of water in plastic jugs in it. Every year I replaced the batteries in the barrel (radio, flashlights, etc.) and the water. I had to use it once, after Northridge in 1994, when our power was out for 12 hours. The reason I kept the barrel outside was if the house was knocked down I couldn't get to the barrel.
