Thinking

If I could go back to any one time during my life what would it be? I had a happy childhood with wonderful parents and a great little sister. We were talking yesterday about a time in our life, when we lived in Cleburne, Texas next to the elementary school. OUr house was a two story with two room up that we used as our play rooms. All the "living area" was down. I remember we had a coke stove that my father kept burning in the winter time. Fall was a wonder time for us, when the leaves all fell from all the oak trees on one side of the house.

We made trails in them and fanticized all sorts of games. We had a pet billy goat that also played with us. My little sister would tell him to wait while she counted and then, he would run from tree to tree searching for us.

I loved the upstairs - and I could get out on the roof, but wouldn't let my sister as it was too dangerous. Ha!!! The squirrels played on the roof also. Good childhood rememberances.. P.S. my mother didn't know this!!

The during my teen years, my parents would see that there was always something for the "crowd" to do. I lived in a small town, no mall, movie theatre, no McDonalds in those days in small towns. The businesses all closed early and the town was dark. But everyone was always welcome at our house. I think the boys liked my dad more than me. Ha!!!

In those days, we had weiner roasts and candy pulls. Everyone brought something to make the candy with - most everyone was poor and all had to chip in. I remember when we would all chip in to pay for the gas to the one who had the car that night - and gas was only $0.19 to $0.25 a gallon. I knew you wouldn't believe that!!!, But it is true.

Nuff' recalling the "good" old days - but I wouldn't want to go back. All my life or least the better part of it has been pretty great.

I've always wanted to make some pulled taffy with someone from the old days because I don't think I make it right. Up here in our resort town there are salt water taffy shops that have machines that pull and pull it. I'm wondering what a dough hook from a Kitchen Aid mixer could do here at home.

I read this to my nine year old daughter and she got a kick out of it.

I think that it is the simplicity and wonder of our youth that we miss. I wouldn't want to go back either, but I would love to retain the magical quality of life as seen by the young.

Ah, memories. You got me thinking about our old back porch, which was a summer kitchen and had a balcony roof and railing. It was off limits for my little brother, but big ole Jon had permission to fly balsa wood airplanes off it into the back yard. I loved that balcony, but not when my dad made me paint the railing.
