One Day at a Time

Only a week ago I found myself becoming overwhelmed with everything we had left to do before we head out on our weddingmoon. So much to do, so little time. But instead I tried to put those Nervous Nelly thoughts out of my head, and instead focus on what I could accomplish day by day. It's been a productive week, and this Saturday I'm finding myself in a much better space than I was last Saturday.

Last Saturday -- I started by ordering our reception favours online.

I purchased a few disposable cameras, so we could set one on every table. That way we will get to see everything we missed out on, since all our time will likely be consumed with obligatory mingling around the room.

And since we're both such winos, we've decided to give our guests a cute cork screw and bottle stopper set, because that way we don't have to order a million trinkets -- just one for every couple, and a handful of extras for the singles.

Sunday -- We compiled our own music for the reception... because we don't want to pay someone hundreds of dollars to play the Chicken Dance for us. We'd much rather load up our iPod and play our own tunes. And because I HEART Degrassi, we couldn't resist but throw a little Zit Remedy into the mix just for kicks.

Monday -- I heard back from the party rental place about the dimensions of their three tiered platter thingy I want to rent for our little cakes. It isn't going to be big enough, so rather than call all over town trying to find a larger one, I'm just gonna look into putting two smaller platters on either side for the balance of our little cakes. I'm all about symmetry.

Tuesday -- I heard back from the resort in regards to room discounts for my reception guests. The good news is there's a discount. The bad news is most of the rooms are still hella expensive.

Wednesday -- I bought a portable steamer for my wedding dress. Apparently, the hotel doesn't want the liability, and I really don't want to be running around Salzburg looking for a dry cleaner the day before the wedding.

Thursday Afternoon -- Our itinerary, Eurail passes and hotel vouchers came in the mail... which was a bit of a relief considering our wedding coordinator, who is based in Virginia, had a heated argument with the guy at the Fedex office, because he wasn't very accommodating about sending our paperwork over the border for some reason.

Thursday Evening -- I began looking up directions on Google maps so we'll be able to easily find out way from the train station to the hotel in each city we're visiting. One of my biggest worries has been getting lost in the alleys of Venice, not knowing the language, and dragging around our suitcases, desperately trying to find out hotel.

Friday Morning -- I went to the drug store and restocked my make up supply. I plan to do my own make up for the wedding. I'm pretty good at it - if I do say so myself - and I don't want to shell out more money so someone can paint my lids blue and my lips fuchsia.

Friday Afternoon -- I had my final dress fitting. And then I folded my dress and shoved it back into the box it was delivered in, where it will stay until I pack it into my carry-on suitcase... Hence the need for a portable steamer.

Friday Evening -- I finally figured out what I'm going to do for our reception centerpieces. I've been buying random nonsense at the dollar store and craft store, with only a vague clue of what I might do. After picking up a couple dollar store candles, a few glass bowls and some shiny bead things, it all came together. I still have a bunch of fake orchid stems left over that didn't fit into the arrangement, but I'm sure I can find a use for them... if not, I still have the receipt.

With every item checked off our to-do list, I feel a little more relaxed. I just want to have everything done before my folks arrive on Sept. 3rd, so we can take it easy and enjoy a nice visit with them before we leave.

One day at a time… it will get done.
