T. A. G. Member's Studio Visit ...

The Tiffin Art Guild's monthly meeting was hosted last evening by member Carol Hoffman, oil painter, enamelist and art teacher. Her studio takes up most of her huge home in Clyde, Ohio, about 18 miles from Tiffin, where I live and drink.

Carol has a huge collection of what I call "props." They range from glass and ceramic collectibles to just about any object she could envision in a still life painting.

Every one of the many walls in the studio portion of her home is covered with her artwork. The living part of her house is too!

She gave us a "lesson" in her method of painting. Carol first works with acrylics to create a "grisaille" underpainting. Then she works the colors over the gray grisaille with transparent oil paints.

Carol teaches art classes all over the eastern USA. Soon she will be down in the Piedmont area for a couple of those. She studied both in the US and Europe.

The last photo shows the painting she did in a little over one hour as she demonstrated her method to us. We watched, mouths agape!

Thanks, Carol!

If you have trouble viewing these photos, go to the TAG web site and there is a page with all of them there. I posted the photos about an hour ago (Tuesday 5 p.m.) Photos courtesy of member Brenna Blymyer!

I like your landscapes better than her still life.

Reading this, I can see the importance of formal or even informal instruction.

Hi went to the web site -- saw some of her paintings at an angle on one wall. But the one she did while you watched, wasn't sure which one it was -- describe it and I'll try again. Your stuff looks good there.

Some people have it, some people don't. That's what makes the world go 'round.

If I could paint like that I wouldn't worry about the clutter.

I don't consider it 'clutter.' Clutter is stacks of boxes and papers on the floor, sink full of dirty dishes, etc. Her floors and sink are clear and clean. I would give a lot for all that 'clutter' as props are valuable to a still life painter.

Though you certainly don't care for my opinion what separates her from a 'hoarder'? Yes I know she needs materials for her paintings and classes but it all looks a bit too much.

hoarders are haphazard, don't know what they have, things are in piles, messy, dust and garbage under things ... no aisle space, stuff on the bed, etc., etc. Expert here, don't ask.

Applause! Thanks for sharing, JD!

Sorry that the last pic did not come up. Instead it repeated the second to last one, so I will direct you to the web site to see the little painting she did while we watched... please go see it!
