Our Old House ...

We lived (rented) the house in the 1950s. I "grew up" there. It caught fire last night. Several of the family (4) were flown to a Toledo hospital with smoke inhalation and some severe burns. A neighbor used his ladder to take a baby, a young child and the mother off the back balcony over the enclosed "summer kitchen." The family lost everything and there is a collection going on in Bascom for their benefit.

Bascom is my Ohio home town. Five miles west of here.

Sorry Dude. I watched as the century old place I grew up in was torn down to make way for suburbia - I cried - I loved that old farmhouse! But nobody can tear down my memories . . .
Glad to hear that there was no loss of life in the fire

Mighty old looking house. Old wiring in mine scares the crap out of me, let alone burning wood.

They left an electric burner turned on under a pan on the range when they went to bed. The fire started there.

The house was built in 1937 or '38. It was a gem. It had double front and rear doors. All the windows were changed to double glass in the 1950's when we lived there. It was cold upstairs but not in the bathroom up there - the only upper room with furnace vents. The house I rent now has no heat upstairs at all, except for my electric radiators. I only use them when I am painting in the studio or in my bedroom.

There's always something sad about the loss of anything to which we were once attaches. Do hope the family members will be okay.

I find that I get attached to places and I am sorry for the loss of your home.

What a sad story. Hope the family may recover in all ways. You must feel the loss of the home as well. It's hard to let go of what was once a place you had strong feelings for.

I'm glad everyone got out okay. Did you read about those 3 children and 2 grandparents who died in the Christmas Eve house fire in Connecticut? The cause was fireplace ashes in a sack - they cleaned out the fireplace in the wee hours of the night so Santa could come down the chimney.

Sending healing wishes to the family. Fires are so scary and so often tragic.
Sorry for the loss of your childhood home, Jon. I'm sure you cherish many memories of your years there with your family.
