A Minority Of One

Education > Layoffs ...

Layoffs ...

Tiffin is a small "city." It is a city, though, with its own public school system of about six elementary schools, a Middle school and a large high school, along with Sentinel Career Center and several attached post-school educational centers. There is also a Catholic school system, K through 12.

Today the newspaper had an article about the layoffs announced yesterday. The layoffs are effective immediately. One of the teachers laid off is a friend of mine, a member of the Tiffin Art Guild - where I am gallery curator and a member of the Board.

All of this is due to 1. the recession, which has hit Ohio particularly hard (Rust Belt here.) and 2. the new governor, John Kasich, who has packed the available state jobs and positions (spoils) with his political cronies and is now chopping the education budget to near zero.

We know that the same thing is happening in the federal Congress, where in order to find money for corporate and higher income tax cuts they are cutting the heart out of anything the people like, especially education (There is a movement to eliminate the Department of Education.)

17 teaching positions were eliminated here yesterday, along with several custodial and secretarial jobs.

I feel for the staff, their families and their students.

What is happening in Florida is just as sad. About the only income to pay for the schools comes from the state lottery once meant to supplement, not support the education budget, and the arts have been cut out 100%.

I continue to be astounded that Republicans get elected. Perhaps these cuts and the travesty playing out in Wisconsin will wake people up.

What goes around, comes around. I know it's tough now, but Republicans will get their come-uppance (just desserts, etc.).

We never hear about the cronies who are awarded high-paying jobs at the expense of important programs, but that explains a lot about what's wrong with the conservative mindset.

This is happening all over.We have the same problem here with all of the school.Taking help away from the mental illness and the elderly.
We do not have any money. But blow it away with a stupid war like Libya.
That is where all the money goes.I am really miffed by this.
Will not and repeat relect Obamba. He did not keep his words.

oh, fredo, don't say that. Obama is still better than anyone the Republicans have to offer.

This is so stupid and short-sighted. Gauleiter Kasich's policies will collapse communities across the state.
Our tax structure is in need of everyone's participation, not just the middle class and the growing lower class. It is so imbalanced. Frankly, the whole community should be supporting schools and community services, not just property owners. I think a small sales tax would help immeasurably.

That is scary! In RI, the communities have to provide layoff notices prior to March 1 for the next school year. It is a silly rule since the districts really have no strong grasp on what their local and state appropriations will be like until late June. The result is the districts end up laying off far more than they actually have to and reinstating them before the start of the school year.

A few years ago, my town laid of 76 (and we are a small town with 3 elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school) teachers. All of them were reinstated before the start of the school year, minus those who retired and were not replaced. Last year was a lower number, but the same thing happened.

I think this year's number was pretty miniscule, but all of the communities (and the state) are facing major shortfalls. Providence is at more than 100 million, and you probably saw that all of the teachers (some 1900) were dismissed. They are proposing 3 school closure. It is going to be bad.

I think your reasons for all of this happening are dead on, and it is so sad.

Same here in Florida--biggest cuts are for education and the Arts--hitting what is left of the middle class and nit effecting the upper class--it is a class war and the tea party doesn't realize that--and cutting education???
