All the excitement over Obama's win has me thinking. I'm thinking about political promises. They are beautiful. They are "promising". They are energizing. They are exciting!
They are practically impossible to keep. Even with a Democratic majority in both the House and Senate, Mr. Obama cannot simply DO what he wants done. The "Messiah" trotted out every day promising many things, not all of them positive, mind you. Many people willingly believed every single word of it. They hung on those words. They are repeating those words. They exulted in those words. They almost worship the speaker of those words. When the balloons have all burst and the confetti is swept away, Obama still only spoke words.
Soon, reality will set in. He is no Messiah. Messiah doesn't need Congress to pass His legislation. Messiah cannot be hindered by the Supreme Court. Messiah works miracles. Obama makes promises, promises that only a dictator could keep.
I understand the Democrats' excitement. I would be excited, too. But I would not have swallowed the age-old political gimmick of promising big and delivering small. I thought some of you were smarter than that.
By the way, to all the political snobs out there, who shroud themselves in superiority anytime some conservative (said with a snarl) comes around, I have this to say: The irony of your self-proclaimed tolerance is only superseded by your gross intolerance of any viewpoint other than your own "higher and enlightened" one.
One more note: If you think that having a black president in the White House proves that America has overcome her racism, you're still a racist. You're still making judgments based on race, and that, my friend, is still racism.
Thanks for stopping by.
I might point out that political promises that cannot be kept come from both sides of the isle in every election. So do "solutions" to problems that, in reality, will solve nothing. (Such as increased oil drilling off our coasts and in our national parks and nature preserves. I believe the mesmerizing mantra of the right was, "Drill baby, drill!")
I cannot believe that anybody would think of any candidate as a Messiah. I saw them both as two very good, and very honest men. And, even though I LIKED John McCain and respected him (and am extremely grateful to him for his unselfish service to his country), I had a VERY hard time with his running mate. To be honest with you, I was on the fence as to who to vote for until he picked a Barbie Doll to be his VP.
(I know. I know. Joe Biden isn't any prize either, but at least Biden is well informed about what is going on in this country, even though he is often prone to laughable gaffs when speaking.)
As far as being black or white is concerned, it was hard not to think about that, merely because it something historic. And the fact that a black man is elected President is being touted primarily by the black community.
However, I voted for the man because I liked his vision. If he can bring that vision to reality remains to be seen. (No President is 100% successful in doing this,) But, at least, I think he'll be moving this country in the right direction again.
