Drama Just up the Road

I am a total techno gal and seem to host my social life online by means of MSN messenger, Bebo and the likes. To be honest it is not that I never talk on the phone with three ankle biters constanly screaming and chasing you round the house when you are trying to hold a phone conversation is just a no brainer.

Take yesterday....... I am getting quite friendly with another mum who's son will be in my son's class next year. We both signed the boys up for swimming lessons and by shear coincidence they are in the same group. Welll......yesterday she IM'd me to say there was smoke billowing quite high in the sky as she looked out her lounge window. I looked out my kitchen and saw it too. It looked about a quarter mile from us but definately looked like it was more than someone burning garden waste.

We both tried to see more out of an upstairs window - no better off. We both would have taken a walk to see but each of us had a sleeping child and it just wasn't worth the hassle to move them. Having figured we would soon hear what the story was anyway. We did hear a siren or two but were still none the wiser.

When I went to the swimming this morning there was a bit of chatter about an incident and that this woman wasn't getting back to her house until later on. But not enough was said for me to be any the wiser. After swimming I looked the paper on line and discovered that there had been a major fire in a garage across the road from where I used to live. Due to gas cylinders in the garage there was 100m evacuation of local residents incase they went off. As far as I am aware these poor folk still haven't been allowed back home yet.

Two garage employees tried to control the fire but it was too much for them. Both men are ok but one did need to hospital to be checked over for smoke inhilation. The reason we didn't hear many sirens was that the garage's neighbour is the fire brigade! But they would habve still had a little while to wait as our firestation is staffed with part time firies who all have other jobs and have to down tools when their bleepers go and race to the station. Most would have had to run past the garage to get there but if the fire was that bad they would have had to detour and that would have taken longer.

Thankfully no-one was too badly injured the garage is a different matter. But it did make the Scottish tv news yesterday!!
