The Manor Complex was built from
scratch and has already got the reputation of being an upscale place with a high
price tag but the 'in' place of Wilton Manors. It was the price tag that kept us
away for a month but we finally decided to give it a try this past
Sunday.
The complex is basically made up of 3
different sections: outside dining, a large room which is the nightclub with 2
levels and the 3rd section is divided into the York restaurant, the Windsor
martini bar and the coffee talk Internet bar with a dessert section. The Windsor
bar divides the restaurant and the coffee shop.
There has obviously been a lot of money
spent on the interior with dark woods, candles, lamps but there is no warmth in
the two thirds that make up the major part of The Manor.
While the prices were a bit high for
lunch they weren't outrageous yet the service and food was far from first class.
None of the employees smiled, we were not greeted when we came in until we were
finally told to sit where we want and they would bring us menus. We had to ask
for refills on our drinks and when Allen's silver was taken away after he
finished his salad it was not replaced.
Allen had a diet coke ($2) and I had
coffee ($2.50) the latter called 'coffee queen' for no reason that I could see
and could be seen as insulting.LOL He ordered the 'knife and fork' salad ($4)
which was served in the now cliched white square plate. It was small hearts of
lettuce with cucumber slices, bacon bits and pimento strips with a vinegar
dressing which Allen said was difficult to handle. I ordered a Manor
cheeseburger with fried sweet potatoes ($9) and Allen a pastrami sandwich with
fried sweet potatoes ($8) which he said was good. Too bad I couldn't agree with
him about the cheeseburger, very dry and cooked too much and served served on a
nondescript bun, a thin slice of cheese, 2 small rings from a slice of onion and
an over-ripe slice of tomato. The day before I had a much better prepared
cheeseburger for $3 less in what was basically a fast food place, Jack's Old
Fashioned Hamburger House (which I will review soon.)
The total bill, including tax and tip,
came to $32.30. Not so much because of the price but the unenthusiastic service
or the 'cold' atmosphere but due to the food I don't think we will be going back
or suggesting the place to anyone. There is a slight chance dinner might be
better and the ambiance with a lowered lighting would help but then the 'noise'
from the nightclub part could interfere. I don't think I will find out.
